Hahah, so i'm a bit weird...

I want to make some small ornaments from malt. Put some in a bottle, seal it and keep it on display.

How would I stop it going off?

I don't think it would tbh. I suppose you could always sanitise the bottle by oven drying along with the malt and fill when hot. Malt may be full of sugar but as long as it's kept dry it keeps for years so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Hops seem to adorn every country pub, they do go brown but that's part of the charm...to me anyway

The simple answer is:

cheat!

I would be looking at some kind of sprayable green ink maybe?

God this forum is beginning to sound like my framers forum, next you will be talking about mylar strips and out gassing.

The UV light also won't help the hops.

Actually my club has done this to demo the variations on lovibond of the malts. We used a mason jar, filled it slightly with black patent all the way up to pilsner malt. It makes a really nice display kind of like seeing a cut-away of the different layers of earth. The display is going on 5 years old and still looks great. The jar is air tight, so other than that I would say you don't have much to worry about.
