Hello folks.

I was considering having a go at making my own crystal malt, but i wondered if anyone had given it a go here before. The process seems pretty straight forward to me and will allow me to have greater control of the colour.

My main concern is my oven. Its a gas oven that doesn't perform too well at low temperatures. Will this hinder my ability to product my own crystal malt?

I dont think I've come across anyone making their own crystal. I think mainly because you can get every sort of crystal under the sun now, pretty cheaply. Cara this, crystal, that. I'm just waiting for some one to come up with Carablack malt

Why are you considering this? Just as a fun afternoons project?

Well you can be the forum pioneer then. Report back when you've done it :thumb:

I'm going to be having a go at making some invert syrup later (never done it before) as today's project.

Piece of cake mate. Do you know how you're going to do it?

Yes. There's a guide on the forum http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=12754&highlight=candi+sugar plus I found a decent you tube vid so between the two I should be ok

I'm going to be putting it in a bitter this weeked. I'm using MJ dark ale yeast which only has an attenuation of about 68% so hopefully some invert syrup will dry things out a bit. Plus I'm going to be mashing longer and lower (65C for 90mins) than I usually do

This guy apparently only gets base malts and from those makes all his own speciality malts: http://barleypopmaker.info/2009/12/08/home-roasting-your-malts/

His website has some information but he also has a book available. I looked into this a few months ago but decided it looked like too much effort for me. It's probably not that much effort really, I'm just lazy
