Hi Everyone - been away for a bit cos we got a new puppy! Taken up A LOT of time!!

Anyway... I'm planning to make this recipe this weekend. It's an attempt at an IPA...

Your comments, advice and guidance are all welcome! :thumb:

30 Litre length

Maris Otter Pale Malt - 5 ebc - 4200g
Munich Malt - 20 ebc - 1000g
Cara Malt - 30 ebc - 500g
Biscuit Malt - 50 ebc - 300g
Wheat Malt - 3.5 ebc - 300g
90 mins mash @ 66c

90 min boil
Centennial - 12.3 alpha - 10g @ 70 mins
Chinook - 13.3 alpha - 8g @ 70 mins
Centennial - 12.3 alpha - 10g @ 40 mins
Chinook - 13.3 alpha - 8g @ 40 mins
Worcester Golding - 5.3 alpha - 30g @ 10 mins
Progress - 6.8 alpha - 20g @ 5 mins
Irish moss - 5g @ 10mins

OG 1.047
FG 1.011
Colour 18 EBC
Bitterness 42 EBU
4.6% ABV
 
nothing wrong with your recipe, but it's not an IPA. As you are using American hops an American IPA would be all pale with a maximum of 10% of pale crystal/munich, OG 1050 - 1075, IBU 50 - 80.

Now your recipe would give you a nice APA, but I'd reduce the Caramalt to 5%, and the Biscuit to 2%, up the Centennial and Chinook at 70mins, use a good amount of Centennial and Chinook at 10mins and at flame out and drop the Goldings and Progress, which would get lost with the 2 C's you are using.
 
puppies are great btw :thumb: but shouldn't get in the way of brewing :)

Was thinking the same re the USA hops. What turned my head was the fact I've seen lots of "IPA" recipes using USA & other foreign hops eg. Bombay IPA

I want this to be an IPA so how about the amendments below?

The use of Northdown/Challenger/Worcester Golding together should give a nice spicy/cedar flavour with a honey finish from the Golding (sounds good on paper - wait, laptop screen :wha: )

Northdown - 7.5 alpha - 10g @ 70 mins
Challenger - 7.6 alpha - 12g @ 70 mins
Worcester Golding - 5.3 alpha - 20g @ 70 mins
Northdown - 7.5 alpha - 15g @ 15 mins
Challenger - 7.6 alpha - 17g @ 15 mins
Worcester Golding - 5.3 alpha - 25g @ 15 mins
Northdown - 7.5 alpha - 20 g @ flameout
Challenger - 7.6 alpha - 20g @ flameout
Worcester Golding - 5.3 alpha - 35g @ flameout
Irish moss - 5g @ 10mins

now that looks good :thumb: , personally I'd go for 50 IBU's, but it's what ever you prefer.

some of the recipes using a mix of big US hops and European hops tend to use the stronger flavour European varieties like, Styrians, Northern Brewer, Pilgrim etc. I prefer using EK Goldings by itself or with Fuggles for more traditional IPA's.

I want to keep the BU:GU ratio down as recommended before but I may increase to 50BUs if you think that wouldn't be too much...

BTW I'm planning on using Safale 05. I have some Notty lying around, but I expect the 05 will give a more hoppy end result. What do you think?

Just gonna call this one Madhouse IPA. The label will be properly Indian though!! Thinking of using the wheel (Indian Flag) on the label...
