I wonder if boozing would increase if prices were halved?
Booze is empty carbs as if you consume carbs in food you usually get all the other stuff too.
As for "diet" drinks....I think drinking the full fat versions but less of would be my choice if I drank fizzy pop as I absorb enough chemicals in work.
 
Just a bit of fun to see how a few blends to reduce alcohol compared to a alcohol free lager from Lucky Saint. Also my Belgian pale v 50/50 with sparkling water v 50/50 with sparkling lemon/lime water

The diluted Pils smelt more like a lager, but was a little watery. Lucky saint is ok, tastes a little odd on back end..not really synthetic but not overly pleasant. Doesn't have much of a lager type aroma to me.
Wouldn't want a night on either.

Belgian pale with plain sparkling water- still had a Belgian spice on the aroma, body of the beer was better than the lager equivalent. Body of the beer didn't feel watery like the lager, still had enough body. Flavours of the coriander and yeast still came through so had a bit more going on than the lagers. My beer is more bitter so some if this bitterness still came through.
Lime water version, similar body but the lime took over and tasted like a shandy, nice enough but apart from the bitterness it was just like a lager shandy with a little extra spice.

I'm really in the camp of squash, water or tea when at home over no alcohol. If your driving and out with friends at the pub then maybe I would go with alcohol free beer or a shandy.

Total waste of beer but I have a lot of beer and the alcohol free can in the fridge so I thought I would see what it's like.

Think I will just try and brew a table beer at 3%
There’s a recipe in “Craft brew” for Bikini beer at 2.7% using the falconers flight hop blend. It’s on my planned list but I haven’t decided how bitter it should be and the book has no ibus unfortunately. Currently the recipe in Brewfather is 39 ibu and I’m sure that is less than the implied bitterness in the book recipe.

Lots of choices in craft beers with no alcohol it’s a shame they are still quite pricey given the lower tax bill.
 
Interesting thread this. Ive been trying alcohol free and low alcohol lately after some iffy health news.

Vast majority isn’t great at all. From a fairly extensive sample, the only ones I’d return to are the Guinness, erdinger and Brooklyn special effects. Brooklyn is very drinkable IMO.

I’ll be trying some low alcohol brews soon. I figure if I can make something drinkable and serve it well from a keg, that’s about as good as it will get.

It also irks that there is no way to seemingly buy in bulk at a decent price. I get that prices will be comparable to normal strength beer as there is no lesss work in production, but a scour online revealed the best per ml price on the brooklyns is the four packs in the supermarket 🙄🙄

I’ll definitely give the William Bros a try next…

Got mine now! So many here saying this 0% Guinness is so good I'll have to give it a go (or a few goes ... I've got 24 cans to get through). Don't think it'll be at-all as exceptional as the Williams Bros. stuff, but at £1 a can I can be persuaded to give the Devil's brewery a try ...
 
The low alcohol Speckled Hen doesn’t quite stack up to the original I’m afraid. The aroma is quite promising at first but the flavour is quite different being thinner and having more berry notes than I remember for SH. It’s drinkable, and maybe you could get used to it, but it’s not the same beer in my view despite the label saying it’s been “brewed to deliver taste and aroma evocative of the original.”

Speckled Hen, like Doombar, is one of those beers I used to really like a few years back but when I have it now it's just really bad.

I must try the Guinness
Ghost Ship alcohol free is pretty good
 
Tonight I’m having this Pine Trail from Big Drop. On cracking open the can the beer sprayed out like a shaken bottle of champagne covering me and most of our kitchen. What you see in the glass is what was left.

The hops in this beer are Magnum, Mosaic, and Amarillo. You can smell them and you can taste them. The beer is quite light bodied but not as watery as some. Not much of a head but a small ring around the glass did persist. Hoppy aroma and flavour. Probably one of the better AF beers but if you buy one, and just in case mine wasn’t a one-off, cover the ring-pull as you crack it open.
 
My last for tonight is this Doom Bar Zero.

Another no from me. Like most of these AF beers the head disappeared pretty much immediately and there’s something in the aroma I’m not keen on. The flavour is better than I expected but still not great.
 
I've just gone for zero beer since 2nd January. I'm not planning on doing a dry January. Christmas wasn't a good one,had a few things going on and going back to work has been a challenge due to how it is..
 
Ideal excuse for Parti-Gyle brewing. Before the advent of sparging brews were made up of one, two sometimes three brews easy to do. The stronger first runnings are kept for later use when not on a health kick, and the weaker beers are consumed while on the health kick.
Zero-alcohol beer just doesn't cut it, not come across one yet that will satisfy a seasoned drinker. We are all going to die, and we have to die of something, but is it really worth cutting out the things we enjoy? We only have one crack at life and we are a long time dead.

We'll dry January is just one month but it does give your liver a bit of a rest. Might not be a consideration for the younger forum members but maybe it is for us older folk.

I doubt that many older folk on here are overindulging in low alcoholic beverages, not spirits, there are lots of medications with side effects that do more damage to organs than a few beers. I did read something recently about those who have gone before us preaching about a healthy diet. They are all dead! And died comparatively young. Let the good times keep rolling.acheers.,

My selection for tonight. After last night I’m having a Guinness and a different beer. At least I will then have one decent alcohol free beer.

I’m starting with the Guinness. I don’t think I have anything more to add about this. As a beer drinker I would of course prefer a regular Guinness but I think this is still very drinkable.

saw these today and picked a few up. Pleasantly surprised. Retained a head (of sorts) and actually had some body and malt flavour to it. Would definitely buy again 👍👍

OK, OK.... you lot have a lot to answer for. January is usually a busy month at work with stupid hours, so I thought I would try some of these AF beers as a change.

I bought the brewdog mixed pack (8 for £8) and a 4 pack of Guinness 0.0% for £4 at Morrisons.

Decided to try the Brewdog Hazy AF tonight. Opened the can to a decent aroma, a bit like a subdued Hazy Jane. Everything went downhill from there. No head and looks watery when pouring. Colour is like a weak cloudy ginger beer. Taste is thin and watery with some sort of powdery feel.

As if that isn't bad enough, I have another one to get through, sometime in the future once the memory has faded.

Based just on this one, AF beers are still as bad as ever and I would rather drink squash or Coke.
 
I’m trying the Erdinger now which seems to be marketed as an isotonic drink rather than a low-alcohol beer.

It’s well carbonated and produces quite a good head although it falls fairly quickly. The aroma is slightly yeasty and sweet like fermentation was interrupted. I’m not altogether sure about the flavour though, it starts ok but the finish is a bit dirty and quite bitter for a wheat beer in my view.

personal taste obviously but ive been drinking lucky saint hazy IPA and I've found that ok. I find that Spanish AF beers are pretty good, but I can only find freedamm generally on sale in UK. Bottles of Corona cero are ok and a good BBQ choice in the summer. Oh yes, I've just been gifted a mini keg of purityclapa guess dry Jan may get a bit damp this weekend.:rolleyes:

You have just described every normal brewdog beer
