Hi all!

I've just started my first homebrew (Festival Golden Stag).

It's started bubbling ( ), and is slow and steady but each release is so fierce that it's pushing the water out of the airlock!

This has never happened with my wines (I'm sure I haven't over-filled the trap) but I'm away for three days can so can't take remedial action if all of the water is pushed out.

Any advise on solving this?

(No problem about overspill - the FV is sitting in a waterproof garden disposal bag)

you dont *really* need an airlock for beer. many people ferment with a loose lid instead...but going away would be the issue there.

if you have syphon tube, attach it to the end of the airlock, then point the tube into a bucket of water with sanitizer in it. that will prevent any infection entering :thumb:

+1 as Rob says. Beer fermentation is usually quite fierce to start with and an air lock is not required. Enough gas will escape via the edges of the lid, and you may even have to leave part of the lid unfastened. Overspill is a problem if you are going away, but just make sure it can go somewhere it wont cause damage and a mess.As long as you leave it undisturbed the beer will make enough carbon dioxide to sit between the brew and the lid to protect it.
