Wyeast say properly stored they are best used within 6 months however can be used longer but may take longer to activate. By activate they mean their smack packs that swell up. Just checked a white labs yeast I have. It has a best before date on it. If I recall correctly they recommend making a starter if it is past the date.

Short answer is quite a while in the fridge.

if you are planning on using well past the use by date then you can always grow it up in a couple of litres of wort (100grm DME/ ltr - boiled , then cooled) let it settle and put back in the fridge for another few weeks...then re-acitivate before pitching.

How long are the sell by dates usually for?

I think it's 6 months from manufacturer. But it's a best before date so can be used after but may require a starter as opposed to directly pitched

According to White Labs, you lose 20% of cells a month. Also, if you're close to best before date or after, it's recommended you use a weaker starter to 'step' it up i.e. ~1.020 or 50g DME/L (boiled).

But... am just a liquid yeast noob and only done one vial so far. Just stuff I read and took note of. Yeah, I know, I read toooo much
