I'm shortly upgrading to a larger set up My mash tun will be 80 litres. and no doubt will be experimenting with bigger brew lengths at some point. So I have a query re batch sparging that amount.
Normaly to collect my 30 litres of wort I split into 3 lots of sparges to get the amount of wort required for the boil ( typically 30 litres approx )
With the upgrade I will be looking at say 50+ litres of wort pre boil. Now with the tun having extra room do I need to split the mash into my usual 3 lots or can I add the full amount of liquor and grains in one go and mash the full time ?

Will my false bottom survive the weight of grains and water ? is there any benefit ? or will I still be better off splitting the mash into 2 or 3 runs ?

would do it in 2 goes. Thats the right way to batch sparge anyway just collect what you need for the boil any extra you can freeze for making yeast starters. Personally we fly sparge which i think gives a little more control

It obviously means I need a bigger fermenter too.....

Fly sparging is much easier, I work on draining 1L per minute that gives the best extraction, set the HLT tap going at the same rate and Bobs your uncle. As soon as the work covers you elements get the kettle on with the 90 min hops and before you know it you will be boiling away not long after the last drop of woirt has drained in.

As for bigger FV's I use those big 60L blue barrels you see them on ebay now and again and I think at one point a member on here was selling them. :thumb:

PD - Move to fly sparging. Definitely worth the small amount of effort.

As far as fermenters go, I split my batches into two 40 litre buckets. That means I can muck about with same brew and different yeasts/dry hops.
