Ive been thinking about my last brew for a few days and realised that the amount of beer in my boiler at the end is an extremely large amount.

I measured 5 litres of dead space after the beer stopped coming out of the tap.
Is there any way to use this beer as to not waste so much brewing 5L extra every time so I actually it the 20L I want. (Have to brew 25 to get 20 out of the boiler without tilting it).

Any advice?!

:hmm:

:drunk:

yep

tilt....

lower your tap

pour the last 5 litres through some sterilised muslin

brew 25 litres

lowering your tap might be a pain, make an offset strainer/filter so that it gets down to the last of the wort, but pics would be helpful  ken.

Lowering my tap would be a pain because its a metal boiler.
first time I did a brew i tipped up the whole boiler and strained it through a siv and that seemed to work OK.

Just wondering if tipping up the beer will do it any harm for clarity etc?

Have you used a tank connector to pass through the wall of the copper? If so it is really easy to run a bit of 15mm copper tube and a street elbow from the connector down into the bottom of the boiler. The effect is that you will siphon out the last 5 litres as long as the outlet from the tap is lower than the bottom of the copper. :)

Hope that makes sense. Basically a couple of elbows and a bit of 15mm tube if you have a false bottom in the copper, otherwise possibly a mod. to your existing strainer aswell.

I can mock something up at the weekend and photograph if that will help.

cheers mate good idea!
I think I have something like that currently with the hop strainer.

I have a piece of copper going into the mesh bag with a right angle at the end facing down.

Excellent. Post a couple of pictures if it works.

I'm sure I've heard something like put marbles in the boiler but you will prob need a lot of them

and then the trub settles out onto of the marbles right in line with the outlet, so you lose more valuable space in your boiler.
Let the dead space do what it does... provide an area for all the crap to sit in below the tap. Having a small boiler is why I'm restricted to 19 lire brews normally. No great hardship.

Good tip barnsley brewer!

Ill give it a go on my next brew.

I get around 85% efficiency doing it this way, hardly any left in the copper... :thumb:

What type of hop stopper do you use?

Tipping the boiler although getting more out still leaves a fair amount in mine.

would it be possible to tip the boiler all the way over and use a siv to filter the rest of the beer?
