Blimey. I imagine that might cause other Klarstein systems to drop in price?

The increments of power do not work. Eg 700w, 800w etc. You only have either element or the sum of them both which is not what is suggested within the interface.

To start the boil time clock you have to frig the offset up a degree or 2 then reverse it.

The first mash stage does not have an audible alarm, all the other stages do.

It should never have gone to market with such fundamental errors.

No, it isn't. The controller is completely different. The Klarstein has 11 steps, the Bulldog only 9. There are a lot of similarities, I agree.

Completely different? Looks to me it’s been put in a more rounded enclosure and the buttons relocated. The LCD backlight is even the same colour....

Anyone have any experience with one of these? I like the idea of the external pump and that you could then attach to another small pot for sparging.

Yeah, I've got one, the small one. Been brewing full volume though.

Works nicely, but recommend buying a malt mill if going for one. The holes in the bottom of the grain basket are of a size where you get a lot of particles going straight through, blocking the pipes up, if you buy ready crushed.

As to the controller, I get a rolling (serious one at that) boil with it just set to 100 degrees C, no faffing with calibrating up and down. The only thing I am struggling with is getting the hang of using the hop alarm feature. The beeping annoys my wife so much whilst I'm trying to set it, I tend to give up and just set the mash and boil steps, and use Beersmith app on my phone for hop alarms... lol This is whilst sat outside in the back garden, nowhere near my wife.....

Other thing, I recommend getting a longer silicone hose for the sparge pipe. I did, much better now. New beginnings with near gear.... Ade's Brauheld Pro Brewdays

Thanks for the brew day write ups. Sounds like a good piece of kit. Trying to decide whether to move from my trusty biab system. Seems like there are some compromises with the klarstein too as don't really want to crush grain.

Can you whirlpool using the silicone pipe (somehow positioned at an angle)?

No, the pumps on these machines (any of them) just don't have the power to whirlpool properly. There's nothing sticking out though particularly, so a good swirl with a mash paddle is very easy to do. You'd have to use a different pump though if you wanted to whirlpool with a pump, one with more flow, but that kinda defeats the object of an all in one machine to my mind. Otherwise, well I do have another pump, and silicone hose etc, and could do just that. But I went to an all in one machine to reduce how much kit I was having to wrestle with on brew days.... lol I just use a hop spider, slightly more hops, and a bouncer filter inline when I transfer (just in case, but to be honest it was empty last brew day). I use a plate chiller to cool my wort, so it's VERY important that there's no solid matter circulating with the wort, as it'd just clog up.

An alternative to crushing your own grain would be to try to find a way to make the holes in the bottom plate smaller, something like an Ikea spatter guard fitted into the bottom or something? I couldn't be bothered with all that though, as you'd need to pass the overflow pipe through it etc, and also it MIGHT (just might) cause a stuck mash or something from reducing circulation through the grain basket maybe? I know that folks used to do something similar with the old ACE brewers though. I went with a malt mill myself, fixed the problem and means the grist is fresher when I use it, so win win. I've seen people with the Bulldog Master Brewer (a very similar design) have similar problems, including with the sparge plate getting clogged with recirculated particles from the grain... Milling my own fixed this too. Oh, and not trying to run it with the valve to the recirc pipe wide open helps as well, half way is plenty... lol

Yup, I brew 14 litres a time, so the 30 litre one was perfect for me. Still getting to grips with it though, so my last brew I only hit 61% BH efficiency. But then, I only stirred once, and it was a super easy, lazy brew day... So still a win.
