Hi all,

I have been looking around the net, this forum and youtube and to be quite honest i don't think there's such a problem with the process of AG brewing.
When i do it i will have a writen/printed sheet with times and process there in front of me so i shouldn't go far wrong

So for me the main/only concearn to going over to AG is purely to do with the ingredients,

For a full 23lt brew. . . . . .
1. How much will they cost
2. Where to source them
3. And how much of each ingredient i actually need to buy

Would it be possible for one of the mods to put on a sticky covering these issues, im prety sure that im not the only one that will be thinking this, and if im totally honest this is the only think stopping me from going all grain as im sure i could do my boil either on the hob or my large camping stove outside.

Maybe even a few of peoples favourite links to where they source their ingredients

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy

try the forum sponsors up above. Some do pre-weighed out 'packs' for recipes - or find a recipe you want which will give you how much you need of each ingredient in it...

You'll need:
Some Grain from 71p per 500g Check your recipe for quantities
Hops normally sold in 100g from £2.50
and Yeast from about £1 depending on the recipe.

Then you can add delivery at £6.95

All available from the forum sponsors

I started my first BIAB brew last week, the ingredients cost about £15 but I have grains and hops left over for the next brew

Yep, I ordered the ingredients for my first two brews from The Malt Miller. Then when it came to ordering my second two brews I found that I didn't need to order as much because I still had hops and grains left over.

Ingredient costs are generally lower than premium kits. The AG kits sold by some shops will give you an idea.... like these £26.88 for 80 pints of SNPA is pretty good. These kits are obviously a bit of a more expensive way of doing it than buying your own ingredients.

You can make it very cheap. If you bought a 25kg sack of Pale Malt and then brewed a SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) with one pack of hops you could do 40 pints for under £9...and have most of your malt and half a pack of hops left for an even cheaper brew next time.

Once you start using speciality malts and large amounts of more expensive hops then the cost does go up but I'd say it's still less than a two can kit, and the quality really is a lot higher

I buy a 25kg sack of crushed pale from my lhbs which is cheaper than the net because I don't need to pay postage. Then plan my brews in advance so I can buy speciality malts, hops and yeast in advance so I only need to pay the postage costs once.

I'm not on commission from Graham Wheeler (having just recommended his book in another thread) but it will answer Q3 regarding quantities of malt, sugar and hops to use for a number of recipes.

Other books are available.

Hey Andy, I am from Hull also and have just done my first AG brew which was easier than I thought and went really well, produced much better beer than extract definatly just go for it. if you want to split costs and buy a 25kg sack of malt between us I would be up for that to save us having more than we need sat about just let me know, and also if you want hops I will be selling some hops shortly in the Hull area and matching simplyhops prices let me know which hops you were thinking of getting

I am aat the same point as you , ihave brought two sets of complete ingreadiants from the malt miller for £15 plus postage, which is perfect the only downside is that everyone only does one or two complete brews after that you have to buy the ingrediants seperately and as i only brew once a month i have yet to decide if i want to carry on with AG brewings as the purchasing and storing is now an issue.

I have been told a 25 kg bag will do about 5 brews so i might consider doing a bag and splitting it down and vac packing it to use later on

Consider a local micro brewery,

One near me has sold me grain hops and yeast for a 40 pint brew for less than a fiver before!!!!!

It's nothing to these guys as they probably spill the same quantity on a brew day as i would use
