I haven't and dont know anyone who has. you just got to be carful of the sediment! nasty stuff! if you drink a lot of that you'll start being ill. thats all i can really see being wrong with brews.

At least with your own beers and wines you know what you are putting in it. The levals of alcohol means that most beer and wines are fairly sterile it is after all why brewing was developed all those years ago to provide liquid which wasn't going to make you ill.

I've noticed my hangovers from homebrew (not that I go crazy with the stuff, but on the odd occasion) are not as bad as from commercial stuff...

Nope. Not at all - besides a hangover of course.

If somethings gone wrong to the extent that it would be harmful to drink, it would be obvious from off flavours.

As far as sediment is concerned, its only yeast, so at the very worst its going to give you gas. However its got lots of Vitamin B in, so its good for hangovers!

Not made myself ill but made a good friend very ill as I forgot she had allergys to Cranberry juice and gave her some Strawberry Ribena wine that is a third Cranberry

Thankfully she was is ok now and forgave me :)

I was ill from it once but I think drinking 2+ litres in just over half an hour probably had something to do with it.

Never been ill on home brew. Ive had a couple of friends throw up and end up with the worst hangover ever after drinking turbo cider though...

The hangovers were due to the fact that the cider had not finished fermenting, it was bonfire night and everyone wanted to try my first ever batch before it had finished doing its thing.

The throwing up was down to 'mate A' drinking about 4 litres of 13% + cider to himself in the space of a couple of hours at 'mate Bs' house party, so it was his own fault. Was quite funny hearing 'mate b' saying he woke up the next morning to find out that 'mate a' had woken up in the night around 5am, let himself out after leaving a note on paper stating he had gone home and he was sorry about the mess in the bathroom....

Other than the above I dont think I have ever had a problem

are there dodgy additives is commercial beers/lagers/wines...?
There is always the rumours that this is the case, and many people believe that all beer should be brewed to reinheitsgebot with organic ingredients.

Truth is that breweries do use additives and chemicals in their beers . . . but generally these are removed during the brewing process (and especially in the filtering process before packaging).

Acids (sulphuric,hydrochloric, phosphoric)
Sulphites - preservatives
Isinglass
Keislghur - filtering
PVPP
silica gel

amongst others

I do wonder if people blame these additives and chemicals for hangovers induced by overindulgence
