Jakehead IPA clone recipe

I've never heard of it. In Scotland a jakey, jakehead or jakeball, is a junkie. So I'm very interested as to what Jakehead IPA would be like.

Tenants Super springs to mind.

Joking aside, what is Jakehead IPA? Who brews it and where?

It’s Wylam brewery’s most popular beer. It’s quite popular here in the North East.

This is how they describe it: Supercharged India Pale Ale.... Rich/bright & amber/bronze with lots of American hop aroma. Distinctly bittersweet on the palate with a massive hop complexity fashioned deep within the IPA tradition.

I’d say it’s got quite an apricoty flavour. Amazing aroma. It’s hazy but not much of a head. I was thinking of maybe adapting a neipa recipe for it.
 
It sounds right up my street. Let us know how you get on with your search for a recipe. A Google search got me the following, but it's not official and there's no follow up as to how good it was :

Posted this in November "Just made my American Pale ale, a homage to Wylams Jakehead IPA, I used 3% Cara Munich and 8%Carapils, 3% torrified wheat and the rest Pale malt to get the caramel sweetness and then loads of hops. 25 g of Cascade, Centennial and Amarillo at 15 minutes and 5 minutes and then, just for Neil, 50 g of Galaxy to steep. I have a further 50 g Galaxy for dry hopping but already there is a great hop aroma. I got 40 litres at 1058 for OG, aiming for 1056.7 so just over and should get a 6.1% ale." The real Jakehead uses Golden promise caramelised in the kettle and has some simcoe in as well.

Cheers. Do you know how to ‘caramelise in the kettle’? I’ve only done one all grain beer before so there’s plenty I don’t know!
 
Not too sure about that. Long boils (2hrs) are said to induce caramelisation, plus decoction mashes.

I've done 2hr boils before and had good results. Although you do lose double the wort compared to a 1hr boil. I've done one decoction mash with success, but I hated doing it. It was a major PITA.

I think the carapils and caramunich are in lieu of the golden promise malt caramelised in the kettle. They should add enough caramel so as to not need further caramelisation in the kettle.
