Last Saturday we took my mother and went to visit my sister, who lives about 75 miles away. We were expecting a slap-up luncheon as they will be in New Zealand over Christmas and we won't see them again in the meantime. I took along a Hobgoblin-type AG clone and a couple of session bitters. Brother-in-law (sister's 2nd husband) is a St*ll* drinker so I didn't expect him to go for the Goblin, but I refrained from wearing my Wychwood “What's up Lagerboy, afraid you might taste something?” t-shirt, and thought he would at least sample my Batham's clone Bitter. But no, it was dismissed out of hand, “my father used to brew his own and homebrew gives me a thick head”.

That was it, his Dad's homebrew gave him a thick head so he wasn't even going to take a sip of mine. I've added ‘narrow-minded phukwit’ to the list of adjectives I already had for him and watched him down 4 cans of l*g*r.

I also took along an aged bottle of Wurzel's Orange, expected Sister to serve wine with our meal and was then going to say “here, try this”. She didn't even offer anyone a glass of wine with our mediocre cold buffet. I did leave the Wurzel when we left but haven't yet received any word that she has opened it or tried it. In anticipation that she would try it while we were there and be favourably impressed, I had another half a case in the car for her, but brought that home again.

So, has anyone else encountered narrow-minded resistance when it comes to homebrew, or are your friends and relatives always ready and willing to sample your wares?

Also, is there any logical connection between homebrew and a thick head?

Certain commercial ales give me a thick head, especially Marston's beers. I've always wondered if it was down to use of sugar - invert or not.

Apart from - If they won't try it they have a thick head? :hmm:

Homebrew gives me a thick head . . . if I drink 15 pints of it

Like James I think it's down to the use of certain adjuncts - sugar is a typical one . . plus the desire to get the fermentation over as quickly as possible to reuse the FV . . . plus getting the beer out of the door as quickly as possible . . . its not finished or ready and the yeast has more work to do. Fermenting under pressure gives faster ferments but also increases the production of fusels . . . and these give the thick head.

I've gone from pitching to drinking in 7 days, and never had a problem (Now I've stopped drinking 15 pints at a time ), but I've pitched large and allowed the yeast to clean up.

Good sound brewing practice = No Thick Head

At the christmas do a couple of years ago the gardener was sick after drinking my beer, since then lots have people have pointed out my beer made him sick and turn it down.

Well yes it did but 12 pints will do that!

got a chinese couple next door [ lovely people mind, but rarely touch ale] anyway one night i'm pottering about in garage sampling a kit i'd done which tasted like ***** but was knocking on 7% when chinese Ken came back from walking the dog and seemed a bit curious about what i was up to, so i got biggest glass i could find filled it for him and bid him goodnight.Next day he came out of his house ,gave me glass back and said 'make you stupid that stuff' and stormed off and never spoke for few days.Usually give me a wide berth now if he thinks drinks might be offered .

Yes in my experience it's greed
I normally get  homebrew, then after they taste it, I get OOOO it's nice innit :drink: then got any more  then :drunk:
Then the next day as Aleman has aluded to they forget that they drank 8 to 10 pints and wonder why they have a hangover
