Hi all

I am making my first cider tomorrow, i went to Wilkinsons and Boyes yesterday to try and get some tannin but neither sold it, is there a household alternative? If not then at what stage does the tannin get added because i could order some online but it wont arrive until middle of next week which could be too late.

Thanks guys.

i use tea bags (4 to the gallon) in a mug of hot water for 30 minutes, very strong and black.

Tea bags never give you as much as a tsp of tannin powder IMHO. If you can get some in the middle of next week the I would add it in once it has started fermenting or even after it has fermented. I have added tannin during the maturation period before bottling to no ill effect.

I used tea for a while, it does work but is never quite as satisfactory as the powder. For one thing, you use nearly half a litre of brew on it which could have been something more interesting.

Tannin is already present in apples. The amount varies according to variety. Obviously cider apples have more than dessert apples, but I have made perfectly acceptable dry cider without adding tannin. In the end, it's all matter of personal taste. Tannin adds 'bite' to the overall effect on the palate,

Hi all, brilliant replies, i will definitely order online and add to the cider once it arrives then.

Will there be instructions on the packet for how much powder to add?

Many thanks chaps! :thumb:

1 tsp per gallon, just mix it to a past with a little water, to stop it clumping then add to the cider.
