is it possible to test the level of alcohol in a one litre container/jar/bottle ?

i heard hydrometers are mainly used for testing 25 Litres ????

If you can put the hydrometer in and it'll float, then it'll work for testing just about anything.
 
As coffeefueled said, you can test anything you like with a hydrometer. In order to work out the alcohol level you need to take a reading at the start so you know the sugar content of the wort (or whatever you want to test). This is usually taken once everything is in the FV but before you pitch the yeast.

Then once fermentation has finished (i.e. once you get the same reading on your hydrometer after testing a couple of days apart) you take a final reading.

Take one from the other and divide by 7.362 to give an ABV %. ALternatively plug the OG and FG into the calculator in the Calculators section above.

The hydrometer test jar only holds a small amount of liquid so it doesn't have to go into 25 litres, if you are using demijohns it's difficult to read the hydrometer so a test jar is better.
