hello

My name is Nick and I am new to the forum and new to brewing. brand new!

In fact I've never done any brewing before at all! I've been into beer tasting, brewery tours and general beer snobbery for a while now and I've decided it's time to finally get round to some home brew. This has partially been prompted by the gift of a kit from my mother-in-law.

I'm a pretty thrifty guy, I like growing my own chillis and vegetables, I carve spoons and make things from wood. I enjoy cooking and making preserves and so on. So it stands to reason that I would cobble together the bits and pieces needed to brew some beer and work it out myself.

However, I've been bought a Young's 'New World Kit' and will be starting off with that! It looks like it all in there, I just don't have any hardware!

Lot's of questions and confusion to come from me in the coming weeks I'm sure!

Thanks for having me,
Nick

Welcome :hat:

if you grow and cook n make jam n chutney from it, like I and others do you will find it quite straightforward, and may have some of the kit needed already, there is plenty of info on here and google, have a read and suss out as much as you can and when you get stuck on something come back and ask, and lots of helpful friendly folks will do their best to help you.

Hey everyone. Thanks for your welcome!

I have some Argos vouchers knocking about so I'm going to collect this later

What does everyone reckon? Will it do the job?

The only place where this kit deviates from the instruction I've read in the kit I have so far is that this has no airlock.

From what i gather this isn't essential though I can use a clean tea towel over the hole? or some have said discard the lid and use clingfilm/lacky band?

Anyway, got my wedding booked for November so should be able to drum up some disgusting bottled brew by then!

Welcome to the forum.

I'm another forager preserve making fruit scrumping cheapskate to.

No offence

As cheapbrew says, you may have some of the kit for small ag brews around you already. Big pans buckets etc.

Have a look around ask what ever questions you like. :-)

Hi Nick
An airlock costs a couple of pounds.. no reason not to buy one.
And that crown capper seems like a pain.. might want to invest a bit more in an Emily Capper or a counter capper better, but up to you.
Could I suggest to read a lot before you start buying things? I still consider John Palmer's "How to Brew" as a sort of bible for home-brewers - you can find it on-line.
