I've got 8mb BT business broadband. I know that 8mg is a 'max' and there is a very low 'minimum' figure...
I've just done a download speed test and it gave me the following info

Configured download throughput = 2000kbps
DSL 2528kbps (download stream) 448kbps (upload stream)
IP line profile = 2000kbps
IP throughput during test 1827kbps

Can someone tell me in simple terms what this means, please :hmm: ...I assume very slow

Just came across your post, my Son is a bit of a computer whiz. I will get him to post a reply via. my account in the morning.

i'd say your download speed is 2mb and your upload speed is short of half a megabyte (512kb)

So, yes slow, but depends how far your from the exchange..i'm on bt 8mb, and i get 6.5mb download!

If you go here and put in your phone number/post code Linky. You then need to click on BT ADSL and it will show you the info for your max speed etc. I switched to Virgin as this does not degrade over distance and have the 20 meg sevice (up to 2Mb per second). I was originally on ADSL 8 meg service and it went down to SYNCing @ 512k!

To be honest, if you are getting too poor a speed for your liking with ADSL and the line is 'topped out' for the distance, I would switch to cable as there is not likely to be an improvement any time soon. This is due to BT's new networks (21CN) only really improving the speed of people close to the exchange, rather than a further reaching speed policy (rolling out fibre optics to the cabinet/home etc).

Sorry if this is too much info... Computing is my job/hobby. :ugeek: :thumb:

Thanks for the replies guys. Unfortunately, I run a franchise business and it's stipulated that we have to have BT Business braodband, so swapping is out of the question.
I might have a chat with them :hmm:

Awaiting a call from BT. I'm really unhappy that our line is configured to 2mg. If your paying for up to 8mb you should at least get it some of the time. I'f I'd of been told I was only going to get 2mg from the start I wouldn't have signed up....franchise or not :nono:

yeah it is a bit of a con, luckily my exchange is only about 0.5 miles away from me, but you could give them a ear bashing saying you signed up for the service with 8mb being the clincher, but since your only getting 2mb, then its of no use, and you feel that you have been misled.
Just a thought there!

I have been misled by sky, signed up to use sky broadband, told by them it was unlimited, but now its set at 40gig usage per month...but with me streaming and doenloading, and internet radio, that 40gig would be used up in a week!!
So i told em to stuff the contract for broadband, and stayed with bt!

If you can only get 2Mbps it doesn't matter what provider you have unless you can and do go cable.

Most 'unlimited' broadband packages have a fair use policy with limits in the 40 to 50 gig range, and throttling at peak times, which I don't think is unreasonable (2 DVDs a week) given that other people have to go through the exchange too.

You best off ditching BT as there service for broard band is laughable but if you threaten them that you are going to close the account you will find you will get the propper speeds for a few weeks.

And on a side note you might want to ask them to turn the gain up on your line this might help a bit to ;)

Don't worry that the upload speed sounds slow - it is normal - ADSL is assymetric meaning that download is prioritised over upload. Your download is pretty crappy really - It is probably outside of your control but to be sure, try plugging your router into the first socket that comes into the house (ie unplug any extensions you might have) and be sure to use a good micro-filter as some of them have poor performance.

I spoke to BT on Friday. They thought my router may be kapput or that my micro filter could be knackered. I'm still having problems.

I've only got one socket and there's a splitter on the take off for phone and internet, so I can't really unplug the phone. Is the splitter the micro filter?

Yes the splitter is the micro filter but if your getting internet then its working ;)

Quite fed up with BT. Finally got to the bottom of this one and they think my router is knackered. Because I installed the router 2.5 years ago and it wasn't done by a trained technician they want to charge me £40 for the router. If I want them to come out and look at the fault they want to charge me £140 for their time.
I'm looking at ending the contract and going with Virgin who do fibre optic 8mb in our area (I was with them before BT)...but swimbo has to bash BT's ears first

Virgin media is good! only had a problem with tv box once and they came out a replaced it for free!!

I recently helped out a lady living up our road when her BT broadband stopped working. I carried out some tests and told her that the router was knackered. She phoned BT and they put a new one in the post the next day - no questions asked!!

What have you done to them V? :wha:

Ah - that probably explains it. Do you know someone local who you can borrow an ADSL modem from to try out? - I have a wireless ADSL modem here you can borrow but it is a bit of a trek for you unless Mrs V wants to call in on her way to or from work...
