That wasn't my initial point of course, my initial point was the lying/cheating to look clever :D

I have solved that Einstein problem in the past without using teh interwebs btw.... or have I?? :D

If you've got approx 3 sheets of A4 paper, scrawled on both sides to show your working, then I would say you probably have.....

Either that or you gave up and googled :D

well if you have done that one can you please get on and solve the grand unifying theory please! Its been a problem for ages now and Stephen Hawkin is still waiting for someone to post on yahoo answers!

A nice topic ScottM.
As you get older you notice certain things and one thing I find I am becoming less tolerant of is poor spelling, punctuation and grammar.
I never excelled in English at school but think I have grasped the basics.

I mean how difficult is it to know when to use 'too' and not 'to'?

Anyone have a view on this? Just let it go?

It's apostrophe abuse that annoys me. The rules are stunningly simple and yet...

Less/fewer

"Try and" instead of "Try to"

The funny thing about these posts on Facebook is, all the people who are so disparaging about people having a punt and getting it wrong (I'm not talking about the 18..duuuuh people here). I've seen some really nasty comments calling people all the names under the sun just for getting a mathematics problem wrong which, in all reality, not many people have found any use for BODMAS in their everyday lives!!!

It winds me up no end... I know this a forum and some may view correct spelling and grammar as just getting in the way of getting your point across, but some posts on here are literally incomprehensible!! I'm not sure whether that's the result of predictive text inserting the wrong word, but come on. Does no one proof read anymore?

The funnier thing is the disparaging comments made by people who get it wrong ( probably looked up in yahoo ) TO people who get it right :nono:

The odd error I can accept as no one is perfect but a whole block of text (I avoided the use of paragraph as this would indicate some structure) without capitalisation and punctuation etc. is just plain lazy.

On a brewing forum there should be some terms that are always correct e.g. lager not larger :)

I can be quite a spelling/punctuation Nazi, down to I'll redo a Facebook status if I have a typo, after all, one comma, can make a difference....

I helped my uncle Jack, off his horse

I don't think it's a question of who gets it right or wrong, it's the issue that some people have too much time on their hands, or haven't had enough to think about since they left school so they look down on someone who has forgotten a long distant rule from a mathematics class. The reason I had forgotten BODMAS is that I am not a maths teacher and so have not come across one practical use for it in the last 19 years. I'm allowed to use a calculator. I've had to store more important things in my brain since then, and as a result, things that I never use have been squeezed out.

Google does have its drawbacks, but without it i would never have found this site

And dont get me started on their/there.

There intention was to arrive their at 8pm

It isn't, the answer to the stated equation is 18.

3x3+3-3+3=12
3+3x3-3+3=18
3+3+3x3-3=24

As you can see from the above, the same equation gets 3 different answers.

Sorry Scott that's 3 DIFFERENT equations hence 3 different answers

The answer is 18. end of

here's one for you

3 men have a meal in a restaurant and the bill comes to £30

each man pays £10

There is a mistake on the bill and they are given a refund of 5 £1 coins.

The waiter cant split the coins between 3 men so he puts £2 in his pocket and gives each man £1 coin back

Now each man has paid £9 and the waiter has £2

3 x £9 = £27 + £2 = £29.........

Where's the other £1 gone from the original £30?

I leant it as BIDMAS - Brackets, Indecise, etc

the monty hall problem can be confusing to those new to it, but is understandable.

I don't know the full extent of the Einstein thing (I don't have google ... )

the new riddle about the bill payment is ambiguously misleading, as there is no missing £1 as the money was added up wrong. Each of three people paid £9 = £27, only £25 of that went to the owner, and £2 to the waiter.

A logic puzzle

4men.gif

Shown above are four men buried up to their necks in the ground. They cannot move, so they can only look forward. Between A and B is a brick wall which cannot be seen through.

They all know that between them they are wearing four hats--two black and two white--but they do not know what color they are wearing. Each of them know where the other three men are buried.

In order to avoid being shot, one of them must call out to the executioner the color of their hat. If they get it wrong, everyone will be shot. They are not allowed to talk to each other and have 10 minutes to fathom it out.

After one minute, one of them calls out.

Question: Which one of them calls out? Why is he 100% certain of the color of his hat?

http://www.mycoted.com/4_men_in_hats

if B and C were the same colour then D would shout out the opposite, because they know that there are 2 black, 2 white. Therefore when D doesn't shout out, C knows that his hat must be a different colour than B, so C shouts out Black.

The spelling thing does annoy me. Not to the level that it does some people, but I do find myself seriously questioning how people can spell simple words wrong on a conistent basis when they are on 1000s of posts/tweets/statuses on the very forums/social sites that they use with these very words spelled correctly.

The level when I get annoyed is when whole posts appear cryptic. I have friends on FB who insist on typing phonetically because they can't spell, it's hideous to try and read.

I know the answer to that one as that was one of my favourite riddles from years back, so I'll leave it to someone else.

However Russ... you are wrong. The answer is 12. I can understand the reason you are coming to the conclusion of 18, but those 3 "equations" yield the same result... they have to.

There are rules in mathematics, other wise 2+1 could equal 1. There is structure to solving equations, otherwise 3 different people could get 3 different answers to the same problem... there IS only one answer to all of the 3 problems that I posted up.

I have explained the reasoning, I have explained the rule and I have named the BODMAS principle that is at the heart of the reasoning behind this entire problem. People have given their input resolutely standing by the BODMAS principle and how it applies to this simple "riddle". If you aren't on the wind up and you genuinely believe the answer is 18, then that is fine.. you just aren't very good at mathemtatics (and that's fine, I'm crap at French). I would suggest, however, that you at least Google BODMAS and try to grasp that the answer, as far as mathematics goes, is 12.

I doubt it, but I'm hoping this will put the matter of the stupid math problem to bed lol....

http://www.picalc.com/

That is a programmable scientific calculator. It makes really simple equations even easier by following all the rules without you having to know them.

Simply type in 3+3+3*3-3, or any other variation of it, and you will get the answer.

I was actually thinking about the reasons behind posting this puzzle. Would you not agree it's more logical that the answer isn't the "easy" one? If 18 was the answer, why post such a simple equation that anyone with a windows calculator can come up with the answer? The whole point of the question is to take advantage of a little adhered to math principle in order to trick people into giving the wrong answer. Based on simply that logic alone you would know that the answer isn't 18.
