Tested out my home made mash tun again this morning after wrapping the 5 gal fv in lots of layers of bubble wrap plus the silver radiator reflector stuff .......... it lost 1.5 degrees in 90 mins i hope thats ok coz im off to get grains etc this morning

sounds OK to me - if you only had water in there for the test then when you next mash with grains then the losses will be minimal by the sound of it.

Don't forget to chuck something over the top as an extra bit of insulation, I use an old quilted jacket  just to help stop any heat rising through the lid ;)

The lids already insulated with that silver reflective stuff but when i tested it earlier i did put about 4 layers of bubble wrap on top. It will do till i get a cool box

It all makes more sense as you're actually brewing :thumb: I found my first brew easier than I thought, good luck :thumb: :thumb:

also stand it on some wood as that will help too. it gets warm and stays warm helping to keep the heat in. the thicker and denser the wood the beter but if all you got is chipboard or mdf just use a few layers.

I put a small pillow over the lid of my cooler box, seems to work very well.

I have thought of pre-heating the pillow by sticking it in the oven for a few mins but theres this little voice telling me it might not be a good idea!

Especially if it's a gas oven
