These are getting me annoyed. So much so that I am sat here at 5.30 in a morning coz I cant sleep.

I have some illuminated rocker switches. 250v 10Amp that I want in my control box for the brewery. I cant draw pictures on here so here comes the written question.

Holding the switch in front of you the off position (o) is at the top and the on position (1) is at the bottom. On the back of the switch are 3 pins. Top pin marked 1a. Centre pin marked 1 and bottom pin (gold coloured) marked 1b.

I am trying to switch a pump on and the light on the switch at the same time.

If I switch the mains wire between top and middle the pump comes on
If I switch the mains wire between middle and bottom the light comes on
If I switch the mains wire between top and bottom the light comes on

I dare not risk anymore combinations, so what configuration will turn the pump and the light on at the same time?

Where did you get the switch from? Is there a part number? The way that the internal light is connected to the various pins on the switch varies, and it is important to understand it before trying to wire it up.

When you wire a normal switch to turn on a pump, you will have live in on one side, and a switched live out to the pump on the other. This connectivity is not sufficient to operate the internal light, as the light typically needs a (switched) live on one side, and neutral on the other. I'm guessing that you don't have neutral wired to your switch, and it is important to have a wiring diagram of the switch to ensure you connect it correctly.

(this caught me out the first time I used an illuminated switch too :) )

For example, here is the wiring diagram for the illuminated switch I used...

If you refer to the left-hand image, live in is the top left connection, switched live out to the pump is the bottom left connection, and to make the light come on when the pump is switched on, neutral needs to be connected to the bottom right connection.

Item: 290843033172 on ebay is all I have so far with the supplier being webelectro and a part number of 09050P1.

If i connect live through the switch and put a neutral on the bottom gold pin will it work

Ok, I can't be 100% certain, but if you look at this diagram for a similar switch from RS...

http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/0aa7/0900766b80aa7724.pdf

you'll see a wee circuit diagram in the top right. In this case, pin 1 would be live-in, pin 2 would be switched live out to your pump, and switch 3 will be neutral.

So if the gold pin in your case is pin 3, then yes, what you describe should work.

Live into middle pin. Live out of top pin and neutral to bottom pin

   We have an illuminated switch
