Harmful and illegal vodka in Barnsley, warns council

Danger warning over illegal vodka

People in Barnsley are being urged to check vodka they have bought because of fears over illegal copies.

A number of illicit bottles have so far been seized across the town.

Barnsley Council's regulatory services of food standards is warning people to check their purchases.

The council warns that the contents are potentially harmful and have been found to contain high level of industrial alcohol, not meant for human consumption.

The illegal bottles can be identified by their acetone smell, which is similar to that of nail varnish.

The council is asking people to get in touch if they think they may have one of the bottles.

So far illegal vodka bottles have been seized in Darfield, Wombwell and Hoyland.

It seems to be hitting the press more often and dread to think the damage this stuff could cause.

Hope our very own Barnsley brewer reads this, we all know he likes to save the pennys but this stuff is not worth the risk. Can think of better ways of going blind.

Especially tragic when it's as easy (and only equally illegal [possibly less]) to make the real stuff.

If ingested just 10 mL of pure methanol can cause permanent blindness and 30 ml is potentially fatal.

I used to often have up to 25 ltrs of (Methanol) in my garage for the bike to run on but those years are gone now.

Used to ride a 500cc Martin Jap track bike with welded side stand (anti clock only ;) ) it ran on ether!, get too close to the tank and ZZZzzzzz bang! :D
