I am a couple of days away from bottling my Muntons Smugglers Ale and on the instructions it advises to use spraymalt for priming.. I put a post up here a few days ago trying to establish what is the better thing to do... either use the spraymalt or just normal sugar, I am scared of ruining the beer (because it was a little pricey)... can you fine chaps help with some good advice??

Also as with all the other beer kits I have done so far it says to brew in the FV for 4 - 6 days until it stops bubbling and I get a steady hydrometer reading.. but I have seen a few posts on here saying its best to leave for about 10 days... what to you fellas think is better???

I am fairly new to homebrewing but wish i had started doing it years ago.. I ve made some great beer and looking forward to lots more :drink:

leave it for 10 days then some of the yeast will drop out of suspension as for the priming it really dosnt matter if you use sugar or spray malt

At least 10 days as 31bb3 says :thumb: the yeast still has work to do after fermentation.

You can use sugar or spraymalt, but spraymalt will give you a more rounded beer :thumb:

10 Days seems to be the way forward then.. still torn over spraymalt or sugar for priming.. so it's a case of ask the audience (forum) and go with the most popular!

Spraymalt might be better, but the amount you're using for priming is fairly minimal. It's not going to make that much difference. I only ever prime with granulated sugar.

Kit instructions are usually optimistic. Yes, it's quite possible for a beer to ferment out in 4 days, get a steady hydrometer reading and bottle around day 6, but it's not ideal. In my opinion your brew would be far better for leaving it at least until day 10, I usually brew at weekends so mine gets a fortnight.

I am bit concearned about all the stories of the Muntons kits sticking! also what would you say is the perfect hydrometer reading after fermentation?? if my beer does stick can I simply give the wort a stir or would I need to add more yeast??

Calm down, calm down ;)

You'll want a gravity reading around or even better under 1012 for bottling that kit I believe, but if its above that after a week of fermenting at around 18-20c, give it a gentle stir with a sterilized spoon.

I always use sugar for priming

Tanks there laa..! appeciate the advice ya know kidddda! I am Manc but living in Liverpool.. so get plenty of stick at work (especially as I am a man u fan) but hey its a great place to live and to brew my ales... Thanks for the advice mate :thumb:

off topic.

Paddy power had liverpool as 200/1 to win the league and 50/1 to get relegated today.

Not much, but I hope you get rid of your yanks, ours dont look like going anywhere at the moment!! they are milking the club like a cow!! Iam sure the pool will get out of the current rut.. but it has been a terrible start for them.. but uniteds is also not good enough..too many goals let in, too many draws.. not title winning form :hmm:

I predict/hope/  .... new owners within days/weeks, OAP(roy) gone by Xmas, O'Neil next manager

If not

Torres and Gerrard going in January

Just before I go can you advise me about pitching yeast, some kit instructions advise to sprinkle the yeast on top of the mixture, I think it was the Tom Caxton or Edme kit instructed to stir the yeast in! which is best or does it matter?

sprinkle on top then stir like mad for 5 mins to aerate and mix in.

BTW - if you get O'Neil get used to writing the predictable team sheet week in week out  Any Villa fan could have done that during his time with us, he will get you top 6 though

what's this football nonsense?? :nono:

Beer - yes, sugar (I like to use soft brown sugar for conditioning ales) is absolutely fine :drink:

Leaving brew in the FV a few days longer - absoluely fine too - my last one spent 21 days in the FV!!!

Biggest lesson to learn is - patience :thumb:

Thanks for all the good advice fella's I will welcome as much as posiible.. anymorec ontributions?? :thumb:
