I passed my test on Friday morning and I had my mates car from then till last night, I'm having bad withdrawal from it, I done over 700 miles in that time and now I've no car :-0 not liking it!!!!

Well done.

When you do find a car please don't use the fog lights in good visibility as it seems to have become a fashion theses days even though it's against the law.
I've even seen Driving Instructor's cars with them on.

I need a car cheap!

Ring round your local garages and ask if they have any cheap trade in cars or if they know of any coming in as part exchange next month with 1 - 9 - 2013 being the next registration day.

Na the fog lights don't appeal lol, I'll have a ring around the garages to see if they know anything or have anything!

Fog lights on are now being used by manufacturers in lieu of fitting Day Light Running Lamps. . . . In theory they should be running at a lower power than if the 'Fog Lights' were switched on.

Gumtree can usually get you a bargain, I often see MK3 golfs for £4-500 with 12 months mot and some tax.
The odd volvo or mondeo as well, good cheap runabouts.

Yup, earlier fiestas, corsas, micras or Pug 106s (the only reliable pugs from that "xx6" era) are good, 1.8L petrol mondeos if you want something bigger. You should be able to get a decent one of any of them for under £500 with T&T. Gumtree / ebay etc. Avoid dealer's main stock as you will be paying a premium for not a lot at this level.

Perhaps even try local auctions, if you know your stuff (although if you don't, steer well clear!!).

I just did a search on autotrader and about 60 cars came up in my local area for less than £500 with less than 80k on the clock...

As a (relative) youngster and a new driver you need to look at the cost of insurance for various types of cars before you set your heart on anything :( you may be in for a shock

I've been giving Gumtree a good bashing and I also downloaded the money supermarket app so if the reg plates have been visible Ive been getting quotes, insurance companies are weird when it comes to quotes though, I'll post a few to let you see

so this is a 1 litre Suzuki compared to a 1.5 litre Laguna.

and here the BMW is cheaper than both, the Audi was just out of curiosity cos it's a 3.8 v6.

and this one really confused me, the brava is a 1.2 and the Volvo is a 1.6, all the cars are between the years. 2000 and. 2003 and they all all have long mots on them so the Volvo wins in the insurance test closely followed by the BMW. I honestly thought the Suzuki and the fiat would have been my front runners.

with that excess you don't want comprehensive cover

But third party's dearer, another thing I don't understand, every quote I get I check comp and third and I'm always cheaper going comp, I can adjust my excess, maybe I should try that and see what the difference in the quotes are.

I have always found volvo's pretty cheap insurance wise and always seem to have been looked after. Prob because most youngsters down want to be seen driving one or that 8/10 volvos every made are still on the road no never cause much meither for insurance companys?
