So hypothetically speaking, if someone forgot to take the SG before letting their first brew go on for, lets say 3 1/2 days, is there any way to get a rough idea of what the ABV is, or is going to be.

What?? Nooooo, i didn't forget, that would be a stupid thing to do

Ok so i maybe should have read up on ABV tearing in a thinking later. Story of my life!

Secondly; judging by the rate of bubble decline in 3 days, i recon bubbles will cease in another day or 2. WHen's best to attempt using my hydrometer to see if fermentation has stopped, or should i just wait a few days after all visual activity stops?

And finally; what are the thoughts on final stage/s, should i just bottle the brew once ferm has ceased, or, should i syphon it into another demijohn, with more sugar? Would that make a difference, or just sugar and bottle for 3 weeks... 2 weeks... 1 day then drink it :hmm:

Too many questions in one post?

One or all answered with thanks

young man from the glen of ruther hows it goin?!
what kit did u brew, how much water did you add and how much sugar did u add?
if its a standard beer kit with 1 kg of sugar to 20 odd litres you wont be far off from 1.040 - 1.045

edit to add: i usually give my brew 2 weeks in the fv then just bottle or keg straight from there( if your FV has a tap then just do this)
u can either put sugar in each individual bottle or 'batch prime' where u boil around 80g sugar in some water and add that to the fv and stir in gently, then you dont have to add sugar to each bottle. do a search on batch priming.

Not bad ma man from the Ferm Line of Dun... see what i did there... anyway :?
One would assume that the sensible newbie, or brewbie, would have used a kit, but nay, i went in with both boots and invented a first homebrew instead :wha: my recipe is on this thread http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=18451

In short it's only a furst 5L glass demijohn brew with 500g mixed sugars.

I think i'll give it as close to 2 weeks as possible even if it stops bubbling, but if i leave it 2 weeks and it stops ferm after 1 week, it won't make any difference will it? I can't see how it would.

See i was loking at batch and some say do, some say don't cause you'll need ot mix it so add to bottle instead. I suppose i could use unopened syringes (from when my daughter needed fed as a prem baby, not for shooting up) mix with 10ml x however many bottled i need.... hmm may have hit on something hear.

Brain storming sessions are great, cheers abeyptfc

Oh and when you say betheen 1.040 1.045, is that pre adding yeast so would be my starting guage? Not that it would be actually so kind of a pointless question

Im originally from glesgae (milton of campsie) but been staying in dunfermline for the last 4 years. im one of the many few surviving thistle fans left lol!
christ ur OG will be alot higher than 1.045 if ur only making 5litres! let us know how it goes!

I've had a quick look at your recipe and am a little confused.

By Light Malt do you mean Malt Extract, or actual Malt, i.e. Grains

If it was Malt Extract your OG will have been about 1.070, If it was Malt as in grains these won't add any sugar to your brew, as you didn't Mash them, and will almost certainly infect it, but your OG would have been about 1.033

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply. No i wasn't that silly. It's spraymalt. I've emailed the company to get the actual sugar content so i can work out the actual SG as have done some research on calculating it from my tap water's SG.

Looks like you're probably not going to be far off though.

Think i might have about 9-10% out of this brew.

Got a really helpfull email this morning from Graham Sutton at Muntons this morning with a OG table per 10 litre and gram differentiation for spray and malt extract. Will stick it up on another thread for reference.

From what i work it out at now my SG should have been around 1067, so you were on the money Steve. Thanks for your help.

You could always try to drink a couple of pints, drive around town in a haphazard way for a while and when you get pulled over by the law, ask to see the breathaliser results. Thank the officer in question, explain what you were doing and why and be on your merry way.
It's a plan with no possible unforeseen consequences...
