Hi all. So I'm up and running again after a very long time. I just need some advice when taking a hydrometer reading, which is do i need to sterilize the the hydrometer and the small tube when i take a sample out to check the reading and do i throw the sample away or pour it back in the bucket.

I use a turkey baster that's been sterilized and throw...........okay drink the sample

just disinfect the wine thief/turkey baster, don't bother with the hydrometer or tube, and then drink the beer after you've measured it - never put it back in the FV - you only increase the chances of introducing an infection to the beer :nono: Plus a little taste will help educate you on how the brew is progressing :thumb:

Don't pour it back, taste every time :thumb:

....... didn't realise there was another alternative :? ;)

Thanks guys. jeezze i use to pour it back all the time 20 odd years ago. Thats why my brew was more miss than hit i guess. Sending our lass for a baster tomorrow.

It is vital to appease the beer gods that you always drink the hydrometer sample.

The process is Take sample . . . Measure Gravity . . . Drink Sample . . . Eventually you become so skilled you can go . . . . Take Sample . . . . Drink Sample . . . . Take Another Sample to Check . . . Sorted :thumb:
