Hope this is the right section for this question (that almost rhymed).
Is there a better hydrometer available than the one i got with my starter kit? :hmm:

By coincidence I've just photographed my hydrometer collection for my Wurzel's Orange “How to”

I'm guessing you've got no.5, the short, stubby Young's hydrometer.

You can probably buy no.3, the Stevenson Reeves hydrometer if you've got a local homebrew shop, it has a much longer stem and is far easier to read. It should still only cost £2.50 - £3.

Ironically, my Young's stubby reads 1.000 in 20°C water while the (better quality?) Stevenson Reeves reads 1.002 :wha:

There is a range of narrow scale hydrometers available from Hamstead Homebrew, but the prices go from £10 to £24 and I don't think I would spend that sort of cash on something which could easily get smashed the first time you used it.

Others (such as Aleman) could probably give you more information.

This is going to be my Next Hydrometer . . . Currently I use one of the Narrow Range Hydrometers from Hamstead Homebrew (0.990 - 1.050) and a 0-20 Brix optical refractometer ( I rarely Brew Beers above 1.085 . . And I have a (Chimpanzee with a stick one) from Youngs (No 5 in Moleys Pic) for those . . . Once you get above 1.090 in beer who cares really

That looks some bit of kit, IMO can`t beat a refactometer, harder to btrak than a hydrometer

I spent most of my Big Brew Weekend playing with the Hanna at Wibblers Brewery . .. Incredible to use, and really difficult to make a poor reading. . .. Was only £123 delivered when he got his though
