Hello all again I have just started to brew ny first ever brew and I tried to use the hydrometer (it's a Stevenson reeves). The reading was at 40 in the red band where I think is should be. My question is is that reading sg1040? Oh and the kit im using is a coopers aussy lager. Pls help I really want to get this right. :D

You would be correct in assuming that it is 1.040, the very bottom of the hydrometer is 1.120, so if you look on this link http://www.stevenson-reeves.co.uk/hydrometers/HBWB.htm then your hydrometer is the first one, left to right.

Don't forget that hydrometers are calibrated at certain temps, yours is at 20degC so if the temp of the wort is 20degC then it would give you a true reading, if your wort was at 22degC then you will need to calculate that to get a true reading from your hydrometer.

The CALCULATORS are in blue in the left hand corner of the homepage (THB Forum) with LINKS, BREW FAQ etc etc

Good luck mate you'll soon be doing it without thinking, if in doubt ask ;)

Colin.
