Hi all,

is it possible to add too much?

I'm not brewing anything where i have strayed from the recipe but I was just wondering.

Surely Wendy it depends on the og and volume. I pitched 2l of yeast slurry into 40l of 1085 barley wine. Even with 20l of headspace it made a mess of the floor.it is better to over pitch and get a decent initial fermentation than underpitch and risk infection or stressing the yeast.

There is an optimal amount of yeast to use to get a good fermentation going. The amount used affects flavour as well as other things.

For the right amount have a look for the Mr Malty yeast pitching calculator.

Too Much can be as bad as too little, but unless you are looking at repitching a strain again and again, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
