How much wort into a 50L pot?

As the question says, What is the max that can be fitted into a 50L pot sensibly?

And how much is left (roughly) after the boil?

I bought it with BIAB in mind, but am now thinking I might get a cooler style mash tun.

My birthday is coming up.....

a 50L pot is big enough for normal strength brews of around 23 litres.
That will take about 35 litres (ish) of water plus your grains. after boil and cool you will hopefully get your 23 litres of wort.

23L brews is the " normal " you can pinch a bit more.

I generally do lengths of about 26-27 litres using a coolbox mash tun and a 50l pot.

My test brew-lengths on my new 50 litre pot are roughly the same as PDs - I aim to get 25 litres into the FV, which means ~34 litres in the boiler to start with. This gets reduced down to ~26-27 litres, and then I lose some to the hops/trub to get 25 litres in to the FV.

A 50 litre boiler with 34 litres in it is comfortably full in my opinion, as you want plenty of head space so there is no risk of boil-over.

I generally boil about 30L with loads of head space such that boil overs are not a concern. I'm sure you could get another 10L in there but you'd want to keep an eye on it.

As for how much is left... kind of depends on where you put your tap. The dead space in mine is 2.8 pints so about 1.5L but I tip it up at the end to get some more of this out.

imo 50l you can do a 23l brew after boil loss dead space I generally sparge 30l then end up with 23l you have plenty of head room for boil over

I would put around 42/44 liters max in a 50l pot leaving a good 3" left for froth from boiling , i would expect after a 60 min boil to get around 33 ltrs maybe a little more .

I used to go max 5cm to fill volume (I think it's 0.5cm/ltr but cant remember which Nordic pots are the same diameter)
At that height you have to be on your guard when it comes to the boil as it may boil over, I used to beat/stir the head back with an egg slice :lol:

I've heard of using a water spray to keep the pot from boiling over, but never an egg slice!

I guess the thing to do is try it out!
