How much sodium metabisulphite should I use to clean my FV's, syphon's, funnel's etc....

I presume this should be mixed with a quantity of warm water but how much?, how thorough should it all be washed and doe's it need to dry properly.
The big question is if you've washed at the end of a brew day how long will it all stay clean before you have to wash at the start of the next brew day. I gather there will be no straight answer to this as it seems similar to people eating food beyond a sell by date.
Your thoughts oh wise ones.. :D

 Only bought 1 kg

The joy of reading books!!! Probably published in the dark age's.

What's best to use to clean and sterilise now and in what quantities, alternatively will boiling water dooo.

we use videne its a contact steriliser and needs diluting at 1.5ml per litre. Some people use starsan which is similar. We used to use VWP but moved on

I still use it. A few litres of the met solution I leave in empty fv or other containers I'm not presently using. Also make a weak batch up and stand all my equipment in on a brew day trial jar glass thermometer hydrometer jugs and what have you, then a quick squirt with Videne as I use them, might be over the top but its what I do.
I use what's left it to wash my workbench down with at the end of a brew day.

its a no rinse solution ainit ?
I let stuff drain but never rinse after using it.
Often squirt taps and pipes/tubing with it as well never rinse that off

it is a no rinse solution but its iodene based its your choice not to rinse but there was some controversy a while back about it not being ideal to consume it

Ok so now I'm more confused. :wha:

It seems to me everyone is extra concerned about sterile equipment! and I know the base reasons but surly if everything has been cleaned efficiently at the end of a brew it should be good to go on the next brew ? No ?

how did they cope with this years ago?

Which bugs are the culprits and where do the come from?

How many of you have lost batches to unwanted bugs?

and do all of the spoiling bacteria come from the ingredients and/or brewing equipment that hasn't been treated or are they generally all around in our draws, cupboards, kitchens garages, on our hands etc.

this could send me OCD !!!! Aghhhhhhhhh  :hmm:

You can use that sodium metabisulphite instead of Campden tablets, for reducing oxidation risk when racking wines, and in conjuction with potassium sorbate for stabilising wines. Also to stymie wild yeasts and a few other nasties when doing long pre-yeast-pitch mashes of fruits etc for wines.
So it's not at all a waste, though 1kg is quite a lot!

For sanitising gear before brewing/bottling, I use VWP because it came with my starter kit. It does require a rinse so when it runs out I may switch to Videne or similar.

Don't know if anyone noticed but Know one answered the original question of How much sodium metabisulphite should I use?

Don't mean to press you but

That was the topic title....

do you rinse the videne off with water ive read its not good for you to ingest it. When we use videne we always rinse
The whole point to using videne is that it is no rinse at the correct dilution, There are people on here who have implied that some of the ingredients in videne are not safe to ingest, but everything I've looked up from the list has actually got an E Number . . Of course it's not good for you neat!!

Is videne not used for operations in hospitals to sterilise the wound before a procedure? and if so how can it be bad for you unless like x-rays if you compound it it kills you slowellllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy............agh...h.h.h.h... :D
