I have recently been getting grain and hops from my local(ish) homebrew store in darlington as there is allways a good stock in although not very cheap. recently i have found a shop online that is selling maris otter for £19.89 for 25kg and many different hops for around £2.30 per 100g foil vaccum packed., is this what people have been paying and i have been getting ripped off or is it just a good value shop as i suspect?? anyway i have placed an order an it should be with me today so time for a double brew hopefully :D :D

Being new to AG, I cannot comment on quality of ingredients, but the results I have got from their products give me no reason for concern.

Thanks for the info i feel better about it now hopefully te stuff will come today and i can get a double brew on the go!!

I assume you are talking of Worcester Hop Shop? All my ingredients have come from there so far but I can't comment as to quality as I've only made three AGs. However, the beer I've made tastes absolutely amazing so I'd take a wild guess and pronounce it excellent :D

Kim's prices are extremely competitive. I just hope it's sustainable...

Adrian, next time you want something ordering let me know and we can split the postage? i can even drop it off to you as i only live down the road. Should help us both out that way. :)

Due an order very very soon as i have a month off on Paternity leave and plan on producing a few brews during this time. Just need to get some more Lager yeast and a few other bits and bobs :)

yes i didnt know if i should mention the shop or not as it isnt a sponsor hope i havent upset anyone. I usualy buy in bulk anyway so the £7 delivery isnt very off putting to me but i can see it being a problem when buying in small quantities hopefully it is a sustainable business as i would like to use them again at those prices

I assume Hop and Grape? or is there another hb shop in Darlo? I call in hop and grape when I travel north from Doncaster, if I can and buy over the counter to save postage, I've always been happy with the price and service. Although if you have found somewhere considerably cheaper, then I am willing to try ;)

yeh i'll still use hop and grape for yeast and specialist stuff but as for hops and grain i have halved my costs :thumb: :thumb: dont get me wron Hop and grape are fantastic for service and specialities just the basic stuffis much cheaper

No harm done, they've had plenty of namechecks and links posted before now.

I've had a couple of orders of hops, yeast and speciality grains from Barley Bottom, but until recently it suited me to get my pale malt from my LHBS. £1.80/kg seemed a bit on the high side but there was no carriage to pay and it was convenient for me to call in and say “weigh me 5kg” when I needed it.

That suddenly jumped up to £2.60/kg, at which point I told them I wouldn't be buying any more and got a sackful from Rob Malt Miller.

Matchless get a plug from me for my bulk malts (MO and Lager). Always nice quality, decent price and usually the opportunity for a chat about brewing. That and a car park with FREE disabled spaces just 30 yards from their door.

Excellent.

(might get a cup of tea next time I pop in now)

I've used Worcester Hop Shop 2 or times now and never had any problems. Also used The Malt Miller a couple of times without issue. I just got the 25KG sack of Bairds MO from WHS with 5 packs of yeast and 4 or 5 packs of hops for around £45 delivered. My local hbs charges £5-7 for 100g of hops which I think is outrageous.

I use The Malt Miller for most of my grain and hops and even the weyerman malts are about half what the normal wholesaler wants to sell them at.

Although I can get Muntons for 16-50 a sack, and Warminster for 18 quid . . . and I paid 29 quid for a kilo of Nelson Sauvin two years ago. . . . and I picked up  5 kilos of various hops last year for around 56 quid . . . .

A lot of the time though I will support homebrew shops . . . particularly BB and TMM . . .they are giving us the products and the service we need and want for a more than reasonable price

Local shops will be slightly more expensive as they have rent, electric, business rates etc to pay. However there has been many an occasion where local speciality shops have helped me out. Personally I will always buy from my local if I can because by the time you pay delivery its not much different and its nice having a shop nearby I can run to if i get desperate. My local shop are also a wealth of information and it would be a shame to lose that.

I do sometimes buy stuff online if I am too busy to get there but I try to keep onlice purchases to a minimum.

Some of us don't have the luxury of a LHBS and have to buy online  Having said that I make sure I put in a decent order so the carriage is split between say 5 brews which makes it not so bad :!: Prices from Rob, The Malt Miller are very good I think and the speed of service is excellent :thumb:

Been in there and bought some of my stuff when i did my 1st couple of brews. However now i get most of my stuff online as it is much cheaper. Hops are about half the price and fresher. at Matchless they have them in clear bags and the big bags of hops they come in the back room are open so are being subjected to the air all the time.
However, if i did need something quickly i would use them again. Shame they dont do lager yeast as i need some. LOL
