I have had my beer in my FV for 3 weeks now. I am not going to get round to bottling until next week and i was wondering how long you can leave beer in a FV. The FV has probably about 6" on air space and is not air tight so i doubt there is any co2.

CO2 is heavier than air, so unless you've disturbed it then it should have a layer between the beer and the air.

I've left beer for longer than that in the FV before ( ) and it's been fine. However, with the present temperatures you run a greater risk of yeast autolysis, which will impart a burnt rubbery taste to the beer - which won't fade in time.

I suspect you'llbe fine though. But any chance you could rack it off to a pressure barrel and slightly gas it up to take the air out? You should get it off the yeast.

Thanks James

I haven't got a pressure but i will rack it of into a secondry tommorow and get it off the yeast.

I've kept some of my big beers in the primary for 5 weeks. with no problems. Now, that's certainly not the norm for me. But on average I leave them in primary for 2-4 weeks. Even though primary fermentation is complete, I like to let the yeast do a little cleanup work for me too.

mine usually spend 28 days in the fv,
without disturbing it, apart from once during the 1st week to give it a stir up and add a spoon or two of yeast nutrient

always turned out well... and the lees at the bottom of the fv have compacted by then.... :thumb:
