I just inherited (scrounged) a white plastic cask. It's been sat around for a year or so with the remains of a ginger beer in the bottom.
I've thoroughly cleaned it with 5 star PBW, then sterilised it with 5 star Saniclean, but the ginger odour is still there.
I'm worried about using it for ales in case the odour affects the beer.
My question is, does anyone know how to effectively remove the odour? I have read the sticky about cleaning and sterilising, but it doesn't cover odours per se.

Cheers

Iv often used my fv for ginger beer and ginger wine then for beer with no problems . Iv never had any taste of ginger come through to hoppy flavours of my ales .

All 3 answers sound good. Not only nice and cheap, but probably hanging around in the kitchen. I reckon I'll need a lot of lemons though! I'll try all 3 I think. See what happens.
Thanks guys

yeah as said bicarbonate of soda, its the best thing to use in a fridge to remove stains and stinks , as usual make sure you wash off (however worst that will happen is stomach pains) its what old wives etc use . Btw make a paste with a damp cloth and wipe it around it works a treat

I reckon I'll need a lot of lemons...

Buy a bottle of lemon juice...easier. also use it to freshen your microwave up heat a small amount inside for a couple of minutes...removes smell of kippers !

I found a really great way of doing it myself,

Received a pressure barrel from a friend covered in pink mildew and all that classic garden shed stench. I tried a bit of soap and water and it stayed immune to that.

We have a Dettol Mould and Mildew remover spray for removing the black stains in the shower: Sprayed it in, swilled it, washed it out, barrel as good as new within five mins!
