I'm intending on using a stock pot for a BAIB and have a 19L pot to start off with. Already I'm thinking that a 33 or 50 litre pot will be required but since I intend using these on a standard gas hob (free standing oven) it has been suggested to me that I would be hard pressed to reach a boil on a bigger stock pot and would thus need a propane bottle and burner.

I'm sure that others will have experienced this so what kind of volumes do people manage to produce on on a domestic hob?

I've tried to do a large cereal mash with a 23L pot and my hob struggled to cope. . . . I am intending to try an extract kit in the next week and will probably do a short boil on the hob, but no more than 10L

I generally brew 10L and my hob takes AGES to get to a decent boil. I think it would struggle with much more.

oh bugger :(

Right I've found a gas burner for about £25 but what's the going price for a gas cylinder? I have a capmingaz 901 cylinder if that's any good? Doin't know how many brew's I'd get from it :(

I think I'll stick the 19L stock pot on the hob tonight and time how long it takes to reach a rolling boil with water. Wonder if I'll need a stopwatch or calendar :D

I would guess that it takes around 45 mins to 1 hour to get a full on rolling boil with 10L on my hob. I'm not even sure 19L would get to a full on rolling boil.

I've been using a 15l pot doing extract brews and, contrary to Scott's experience, have had no issues with boiling up 10-12l on my gas hob.

I use a 60 litre pot on a range-type cooker hob, using one large front and one smaller rear burner. I've had no problem getting a good rolling boil with a 45 litre brew.

Camping gaz cylinder: forget it :nono:

Look on freegle for gas bottles to avoid the deposit charge, or ask at your local tip.

19kg 38kg or 47kg gas bottles with a propane burner would be the ideal combination but must be used outside or in a well ventilated area. ken.

Well I started the experiment thinking that Mrs J wouldn't be back for an hour......

I put about 15L in the 19L stock pot via the hot tap (combi boiler) starting temp was 50C Mrs J arrived home and took the pot off the hob after 15 mins. by which point it was 65 C.

Will try again later but it seemed to be going up by about 1C a minute that said I think a burner and gas bottle is the way to go.

I've not had any issues doing 10-12L boils, that's generally the size of my wort by the time the fermentables are added. I don't think I could do much more... like say 19L :)

well its just off being able to do 15L :( so gas bottle and burner will have to be sought.

If I can't source a 2nd hand one what is the normal deposit cost?

i paid £30 for deposit and just over £30 for a 13kg bottle , i can get a 30 L boil from 40c to boil in around 15/20 mins .

I use a 19l pot for BIAB i fill up the pot from the kettle then adjust with cold for my mash, i havnt had any issues reaching a rolling boil with a full pot, it takes a while but theres no rush. Get a mate round and have a few beers while you wait its what i do

Nice one :thumb:
Been reading this thread with interest as i'm looking to use a 19l pot on my gas hob

Its very doable i just have a standard 4 ring hob, like i say its not the fastest method im sure but all you need is a pot and a bag

Its reaching a rolling boil with the lid on but as soon as I take it off it goes off the boil :( anyway I've just remembered that the LHBS which don't really do AG have an electric boiler in cheap they've probably had it in stock a couple of years. Might be worth seeing if I can get a deal on it.
