Whats the best materials to use for weighing hop socks below the surface of the wort. I use a few marbles but my wife pointed out the other day that glass marbles have a tendency to shatter and break when put into boiling water. So I was wondering what the best thing to use would be.
I have a few heavy brass fittings that weight wise would be ideal but is brass safe to use ? I guess it is for the boiler but how about the fermenter. or should I stick to marbles for that...( Marbles are getting harder and harder to find these days...)

is this a hop sock to go in a fermentor or for in the boil? Because if it was in the fermentor it would mater if they were glass and if it was in the boil why weight it down, most my hops stay on the surface untill they get saturated then sink after about 30- 40 mins of boiling.

Its the fermenter mainly GA. I've got a hop filter added to the boiler now so in future hops will just get chucked in to float around.
I was wondering if a plumbers brass fitting would be ok in use in the fermenter. However I've just found 2 s/s bottle stoppers in the kitchen draw. heavy enough but I'd need to remove the rubber seal of them.....

I have a brass tank fitting in the bottom of my fv permanently, so on that basis I would have said it was fine. :thumb:

However if it is for the FV surely marbles sanitised would do just as good a job. Personally when I have used a hop sock I have just sanitised the sock put in the hops and put it in and pushed it under with a a spoon. as long as the hops are in contact with the beer it will be fine they should sink anyway once they get soaked. :thumb: :thumb:

cheers. when me marbles need replacing..... :? I'll use the brass fitting. I can't get mine to sink in the fermenter they are floating right on the top and above the surface...
