So.....
I have in mind an IPA recipe but would like some input on how to design hop additions.
I would like to use Magnum hops for bittering (60 mins) maybe 17g?
Then hop additions at 15mins and at 0mins.

I would like to use Nelson sauvin and cascade for flavour/aroma but unsure of quantity and which order they should be added in. Thinking maybe the NS added at flameout?

I'd like a beer high on flavour but not overly bitter

Malt is likely to be marris otter or similar

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Guess I'm aiming for 40-50ibu? No idea how to work out my hop additions to target this tho.....

I stumbled across hopping for flavour with "equal" additions at 10, 5 and at flame out and then dry hopping for aroma with equal total amounts used for flavour.

I use a calculator like brewers to see bitterness, bare in mind the higher the alpha acid the more bitterness they provide.

Your 17g of magnum (in 5kg of pale malt) at 60 mins with
15g of both cascade and nelson saving at 10mins
15g of both cascade and nelson saving at 5mins
20g of both cascade and nelson saving at 0mins

This would leave 50g of each to dry hop with (if you're buying 100g of each)

Gives just over 50ibus using brewers friends default AA%

Alot of neipa have very little if any bittering addition so you could try the magnum at 30mins(?) Which would drop the ibus to around 43 according to brewers friends.

Good luck

Thanks for your help, do you have a link to the calculator you used to work out the IBU's?
Might be a good idea to delay the bittering hops as you suggest!

Quick discussion cause I haven't really heard clarity on styles. When I hear IPA, I get a profile of 6.5% and up on ABV and really hoppy. I don't think it's an IBU rating that matters but more of a hop bomb. But what IBU's come to mind is like 60 and up. What is others thoughts on this?

Cool. But then what's a DIPA???? Haha
Don't get me wrong, I think this IPA thing is off the rails. I love a good British bitter. It's the best.

DIPA Vital Statistics:
IBUs: 60 - 120
SRM: 6 - 14
OG: 1.065 - 1.085
FG: 1.008 - 1.018
ABV: 7.5 - 10.0%

Numbers get higher, the sips get smaller.

Thanks. I guess I've only been around American IPA's. Sounds like the British IPA is for me. I like hops but recently it's getting crazy.
