I'm going to make my first aipa at the weekend. I am thinking of a good combo to put together.
I have loads of hops in stock including; citra, Amarillo, cascade, centennial, simcoe, chinook, magnum, perle, columbia, and quite a few European varieties too.

I use magnum for buttering a pale ale mainly, I was thinking for an IPA I could use something a bit less smooth if I wanted to, but open to suggestions...

How about Amarillo, cascade, citra, simcoe and centennial?

Yes I missed that chinook will have a good bittering as its normally 14%.. what you aiming for 60 IBUS +?

you could then just split your other hops into say 15/10 5 and flame out (I would do a good 30 min hop stand with them flame out)

Pretty much exactly that Covrich, except I was thinking of pushing the ibus a bit higher. I'm not sure of the bu:eek:g ratio off the top of my head but I was thinking maybe 80~ ibus

Cor! You want the OG to be around 1.060 then in my humble opinion...

I've used chinook as bittering in my recent one that then included centennial and Citra. Really nice. But one before I used simcoe as bittering then more simcoe and Amarillo towards the end. Dry hopped with both think 70/30g simcoe/Amarillo. That was a very nice ale!

ok, so I've finally settled on:
Bittering with Chinook and Citra.
10, 5 and FO additions of Chinook, Citra, Centennial, Mosaic and Simcoe. All of equal quantities. Aiming to hit 65 IBU ish... with a BU GU ratio of .96
I know its not very refined... I really don't know about how to use any of these hops, I just thought I'd suck it and see.

Oh, grain bill is Pale malt, Cara malt, Vienna and Carapils.

Wish me luck. I'm going in.

Agreed. Citra is quite assertive in it's bittering too - I don't like. If you're going to couple Chinook with anything at the start, I'd suggest Mosaic. It's got a great, smooth bittering quality.

I'd just chinook it at the start. Pretty much all my recent American ales have had that as a start and all been very good. If I do say so myself.

I hope so! It's my first attempt at my entry for the national homebrew competition!

There is a passing resemblance to my APA recipe for the comp - with Chinook for bittering.
I've settled on the recipe but just can't decide when to brew for it to be at its best
