Not sure if any one has heard of this type of beer, as I have only come across it in the Royal Navy (Tinned) and on draught in Gibraltar (20 odd years ago). Never could work out if it was bitter or lager but deffo sparkling.

Just returning to homebrew and would love to know if there is a kit or recipe somewhere, not that I have knowhow or courage to try at the moment

there's a fair few Courage clones around - not sure about the sparkling beer, but I suspect it's an ale brewed to taste like and carbonated like a lager. can you explain the taste a bit?

It was a weird taste. I remember someone comparing it to "Lager with caramel" but I swear it was a bitter.

It didn't take many to get merry.

Not sure about the Courage beer but Ind Coppe did a beer called long life around the same time. That one always seemed 1/2 way between a pale ale and a lager to me.

This was a bitter. Very strong! I remember 3 pints was enough but saw a guest from the foreign office drink 6 pints. Watching him deteriorate after each one was a sight to behold right until he fell off the stool. It was quite fizzy though

If thats the case, i.cant see why a lager or light ale.kit with some crystal malt boiled in wouldnt be far off! As for the strength, add more dme or beer kit enhancer to boost abv. You will probably need to bottle to achieve a high level of carbonation?

Ill have a look and see if i can pull up anything on it :-)

Tonights trawlings bring up that it is indeed a lager or light ale with caramel, which would be light crystal or caramel malt, the cans themselves dont actually list the abv but it was marketed as a strong ale, so no doubt you are looking at 6% or so!

Grab a lager kit, brew it with an ale yeast and some extra kit enhancer, and boil up some caramel or crystal malt and add before fermentation. I would think the stuff usually spends some time in storage, so you might want to give it some age :-)
