I just started my first AG using one of the mash kits from the Homebrew Company, the HBC English Pale Ale kit, and was just wondering if anyone else has tried any of these mash kits, and if so what they thought? :)

My first AG was a Homebrew Company ESB. and despite me trying to do everything wrong to it, it has turned out to be very, very tasty.
Especially the bottles that have remained in bottle longer than 4 weeks or so. Well recommended.

Cool, thought it'd be a good place to start for my first AG and I was right, was dead easy. Would recommend to anyone else who wants to try AG for the first time, no messing around with scales for a start, everything already measured out for you and all the hops separated with the boil times printed on the bags.

They are good to start off with, but once you have done a few, it's better to buy the malts and hops separately.

Firstly, because it works out cheaper and secondly because you will work out what malt equals what flavour - the HBC Brown porter is a gorgeous drink (my friends and I pretty much drained a corny of it this weekend), but it's frustrating not knowing what malts and hops go into it - I'd like to create something similar again, but maybe a little lighter. I can't do this as all the grains are pre-mixed in one bag.

If you want to try different kits but ones where the ingredients are labelled, I'd also check out Worcester hop shop. Good prices, although it makes sense to buy a couple of kits at a time due to the postage bands.

But I'm now going to do my own recipes, so I'll be buying a 25kg sack of MO and a few darker malts and take it from there...

Yeah thats true, I was thinking of emailing the company to ask what the quantity of each ingredient was just for future reference but not sure if they'd be able to tell me.
As for the cost, I found it pretty reasonable, about 18 quid for everything. Maybe if you bought all the ingredients in bulk it would be cheaper though.

I bought the American Wit kit and emailed to ask what the ingredients were and the guy got back to us no bother. he was really helpful with showing me how to assemble my copper manifold aswell.

Rwilts - yeah you would be able to do the kits BIAB,

Yeah I emailed the sales guy and he was able to give me the recipe which was a big help. And yes they are suitable for biab, thats what I got it for :thumb:
