Whats happened here, I got a can of geordie mild and burnt off a 1kg bag of sugar and made a 3 gallon mix it fermented out to round about 4.5%, its a lovely tasting drink but it has laxitive properties,I drank a couple of bottles and had the runs all day, I drank a couple the day after just to make sure it was the beer and not something Id eaten and it happened again. Just to make sure it was the beer I gave some to 2 friends and they all come back and said 20 mins after drinking it they followed through. Is the mix too rich or something that sort of onsett doesnt indicate pathogenic bacteria ?

As far as I know, no pathogens can survive in beer. That's why it was preferred during the middle ages instead of water. Safer! Interesting problem though.

most bacteria won't survive in beer. I'm imagining the beer kit contains some sort of sweetener like xylitol that's causing it.

graphic post though, thanks. hahah.

Yeast can give you the runs.
Don't know how you racked bu maybe you brought a load of yeast with you?

Doesn't sound like a pathogen (or yeast for that matter) to me - they'd take a good bit longer to get (you) going.

It sounds more like something that the body identifies as poisonous and whooshes through as quickly as possible.

When you say "Burnt off", how exactly did you prepare that kilo of sugar?

I would have "yeast" at first but for one , people who know more than me say "no" and two ; 20 minutes ! 20 MINUTES ! That really does sound like poisoning of some kind .

re ; Beer being the preferred , safer drink throughout the ages . Yes , this is true , but the reason is that the water would have been boiled and the alcohol content acted as a preservative . Most kits if made to instructions wont be boiled so any kind of nasty an get in there , and many can survive the low alcohol levels involved . Norwalk has made a big comeback this winter , but thats a virus I believe - where was the kit made and how was everything it touched or touched it cleaned . I wont say "sterilised" because we do not really sterilise our brew kit , just get it clean enough for our purposes .

More than the trotting guiness , anyway ....but I really admire your dedication to scientific method - testing it on a control group of unsuspecting friends ! A big Mr Burns "Excellent !" to you , sir !

Was it full "Flock o Sparras", "Pebble Dash" or just lumpy farts?? Either way the best cure is Bisto Gravy Granules. Doesn't cure the runs but thickens them up nicely :thumb:

The best ones are Shuttle lift offs, you know, the camera view of the shuttle engines at lift off? Always best to hang on to the crapper so you don't hit the bathroom ceiling.

Just started drinking Munton's Imperial Stout (2 can kit). A great pint with no after effects the next day!

Cheers,

From what the OP said I dont think the next day was the problem ....sounded more like mercury poisoning . Without the added perk of highly amusing insanity .
