Hi There,
Just started this homebrewing and just got my delivery of my new kit. I followed the instructions i got off homebrew.ie but i think ive done something wrong.
I got a box of muntons gold and did everything that was on the sheet, but i did not see anything about adding sugar, I thought as this was a kit it would already be in it to start with.
Ive checked the SG and it was 1046, and added the yeast at about 25 deg. But i dont see any bubbles starting or anything like that. I kept a glass beside my wort for checking the ABV but it aint doing anything either.
Now i just closed the lid at 7pm about 4 hours ago, would or should i be seeing anything happening as yet or is it too early.
Also temp of the room is 22 deg, as this is the only place i have to store it.
I sterilised everything first and then rinsed with cold water from tap.
I boiled 100ml of water and let it cool to 30 deg then added yeast and covered.
I boiled some water and then poured it into a pot that held the beer can.
I then added 2lt of boiling water and mixed it up then filled with cold to 23lt. Let it all cool to 25 deg and mixed it up and stuck on lid with the little air lock.
Have i done this right or should i have added sugar as i thought and if so when do you add it.

cheers Gerry

Hi & Welcome :thumb:

Good news, you're bang on track!

It is too early, some fermentations will show signs after 2 or 3 hours - most though are 12 - 24.

1.046 will give you a 4.4(ish)% beer (what kit was it?)

22c is ok, 20 would be better but at 22c you'll be fine, any higher 'may' give off flavours but don't panic.

From what you've said you'll be fine, be sure to report back tomorrow though to tell us how it's going :thumb:

Cheers, Wez

Hi Wez,

Yep was the Mutons Gold kit, Just got word didnt need sugar so my panic is over on that point. Will keep an eye on the temp tho and will come back and let you know if there is any better activity going on.

Also says 4.5 on the lid but if i get 4 ill be happy says me buying bottles of bud, Theres a point will need to get some bottles organised if all goes well.

Heres a question how many bottles would be in a 5 gallon barrel as i have one of them and i could just store the whole barrel in the fridge.

Cheers Gerry

It's around 36 - 40 bottles :thumb:

Use strong ones though and do a bit of reading here on the forum about priming and avoiding bottle bombs :)

Yep think ill do a bit of reading dont like the sound of bottle bomb's.

Hi All,
Well all seems to be going the right way. I can see that the lid is pushed up and there are some small air bubbles in the airlock. i can also see brown like colour appearing on the lid inside. As far as i can tell i think there is a foam like top above the brown wort.

Would this be right kind of thing going on as while i sit here i dont hear any bubbling or anything like that, Seems my fermentation is very laid back here.

Cheers Gerry

Hi all,

think ive a problem here, I had put some of the sterilising solution into the airlock and my son knocked against it. this is youngs brew 500g and it looks like some has gone into the wort. Is this now scrap or what. i wouldnt mind but its only starting to bubble now.

How bad or what.......

Gerry

I wouldn't scrap it - but wait and try it. I had the same problem when kegging my TC - I didn't pop the lid and I'd left the airlock on, so it all got sucked into the wort. It was ok. Don't panic. :thumb:

Ok no probs would be a damn shame to scrap it, Just couldnt bring to pour all that beer out. Would be against my Religion or something like that. Hell if it tastes bad theres always a dash of lime or blackcurrent....

I am going to be starting of a new brew on saterday.

Brewmaster pilsner larger Approx 1040 (what APV I dont know)
It says i have to add the sugar when adding the syrup. So would i do the same as i done for the last brew.....

Rehydrate Yeast..
Put can in boiling water for 10mins ( can says to simmer in a little water for 10mins ie..open and pour into pot) Or do i just heat it while in the can and then add 2L of boiling water and mix..
Then add cold water to 23L Mix Well..Take Gravity read
Let cool to 30deg then add yeast.

Im just a bit mixed up about the adding sugar and the simmering in the pot any info here..

Cheers Gerry

They only say to boil the can so the thick wort heats up a bit and you can easily get it ALL out. You may want to pour a little boiling water into the can (from a kettle?) and swill it around a little just to get the last dregs of all-important flavour. You can add the sugar at the same time, as it's only really important that it all disolves fully. If you're making up the remainder with cold water, you'll probably find that the temperature is within range when you've done this.

Yep follow now so i will just heat in the can and then add the boiled water and was the car with this water adding to the wort. Also add sugar at this time also.

Hi All,

My lazy old tired fermentation has gone off with a bang, What i notice as im sitting here is that the air lock water is being pushed out of the air lock. I am having to refill every 20mins or so. Is this normal and if this keeps up tomorrow and all the water is pushed out of the airlock totally will the wort be open to crap and go bad.

Cheers Gerry

You could just take out the airlock and replace it when the fermentation cools a bit or if it's more aggressive than that you could run a blow off tube from the fermenter :thumb:

Good idea AT

Might try a run off pipe as i dont really want to leave the airlock out.

Cheers Gerry
