Hi all you brewers, I have been brewing for 30 years, one of my favourites was Sarahs Brew...Woolies used to sell it, a dry kit..3 hours of simmering hops, malted barley and sugar. Used to stink the house out...but worth the suffering...the Mrs was not so keen!! Recently (about 10 years) I have been using Brewmaster Victorian Bitter, this company changed hands about 2 years ago and the yeast nutrient disappeared and the finish seemed to lack a the body it had...so malt taken out of the wart. Adding 500g medium malt instead of 500g sugar has restored the body and the yeast nutrient is not missed and the beer is still fine after 10 days from start (heat needed in winter). Recently in the local home brew shop the price has increased from £10.25 to £11.49. Also I make a cheap wine kit (hey, it keeps me off the steets), Wine Buddy 7 day 25L kit Cabernet 'Style' ...price has gone from £19.99 to £27.99...apparently the price of grape juice has gone up. The lovely people who run the home brew shop are not in the best of health and must be close to retirement so has any body else found that kits have just gone up stupidly in price?? I recently ordered stuff from an online supplier and spent £64 with them, the eqivalent with the home brew shop would have cost £85...and incidentally delivery was free..I live 5 miles from the home brew shop and always have to make a special journey.
This is not a bleat from a rich landowner who will insist on saving a penny, I can't afford to go to the pub often (I wish I could), I love a pint in the garden at the end of the day, I want to support local buisnesses.......but I can't afford to be ripped off.....Please comment :drink:
