I’ve been making wine and beer on and off for the last forty odd years and had some notable failures along the way, but, I’m glad to say, the results get better with time.

Like a lot of us oldies I started off with the Boots kits (beer OK but not the wine). So I started making fruit wines. They weren’t too bad but I found it was a lot of time and effort for something that didn’t really stack up against grape based wine so I went back to kits and spent many years trying to find a really good one.

About three years ago the local brew shop told me about the new range of Canadian produced kits. Instead of the traditional two pints of fruit juices that taste something like what it says on the box these kits are 90% pure grape juice. Everything you need (yeast etc) is included. The kits are more pricey but the results are fantastic.

Pity I can’t say the same about beer kits. After many years I’m just about ready to give up on anything but Bitter. I haven’t yet found a Pilsner the pours clear or a stout that really tastes like stout.

I also enjoy a glass or two of cider and again I can’t find a kit that doesn’t taste like fizzy, watered down apple juice so if anyone has a receipt that involves 100% real apple juice (and knows where to get it) I’ll be glad to hear.

A bit about me. I live in north Ess*x (great county, don’t believe the press), I’ve been happily married for 40+ years, we have two children and one grandchild. After many years working in London I’m now retired and enjoying every minute of it. If there’s anyone out there who’s worried about retiring I can only say Don’t. Grab the chance with both hands and don’t look back. Trust me in a few months you’ll wonder how you had time to go to work.

All the best.

PS Please excuse the Ess*x above. The text checker seemed to object to the correct spelling!

Welcome to the Forum Ian :thumb:

Nowt wrong with Essex (though it is a little to close to France for comfort). :thumb: :thumb:

Even brewed with some Essex Yeast for Ridleys brewery today, courtesy of our resident Essex Brewer DennisKing.

Welcome :thumb:

Hi Ian, welcome!

There are some really great kits on the market now, Muntons Gold range, Better Brew, and Woodfordes are all producing really drinkable stuff. Oh, and brewferm of course.

As to cider - if you want something "west country" flavour then speak to that man Graysalchemy... :thumb:

What know you of England whom only England know?
Nice and warm here today I'm just getting the pool ready for a long hot summer!

Hello and Welcome!

Both DennisKing and I are from Essex too, good to see another local man pop up.

Coopers also do a good range of beers and ales and Black Rock do a lovely stout. I use the home brew shop in Colchester as he has a very wide range of kits available.

All the best.

 The forum robot gets a bit nervous if a new member tries to post something with *** in the word i.e. Essex
