Hi guys

I'm new to brewing other than a few school projects 30 odd years ago and a bit of wine 20 odd years ago.

I would like to try and make myself some beer, I live about 3 miles from a Maltings and have several friends who work there so malt is no problem.

I want to make a nice light summer type ale with citrusy flavours, sharp but not too bitter and somewhere around 3.6-3.9%.

over the next couple of weeks I will be rounding up all the equipment required to have a go

I need advise on malt types, hop types, yeast types and when to add them so if anyone would like to comment I would be eternally grateful and if youre ever this way there will be a pint or three with your name on them

Mike

Your light colour makes the malt dead easy, just 100% pale malt (Maris Otter or similar) will do that for you. Citrus comes from your hops, a lot of the American hops like cascade, citra, amarillo and centennial give citrus flavours. A simple SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) would be a simple recipe, you wouldn't need to buy much and should give a beer that fits what you're after

Yeah go Maris Otter then a nice all purpose hop like citra (goldings would also be nice but you'd need lots to get the bitter flavours).
Things like strength will be hard to predict without knowing mash efficiency but you could always download brewmate and use the "style nazi" mode.
This way you can set the desired style and experiment grain and hops to get the right profile in terms of IBU... Any none typical values are highlighted yellow and if you click the box and hover it tells you what is typical for that type.

Hi and welcome, if you are going to go all grain I would recommend the Graham Wheeler book Brew your own British real ale, it's a very good an easy to understand book. And the recipe for Summer lightning would is a great summer beer.

Well I've now managed to get all my kit together, mostly from "the good life" home brew shop in Norwich, what an Aladdin's cave of a place that is,
I just need to formulate a recipe and get my malt delivery and I'll be away, happy days

Mike
