I'm totally happy with my plastic AG setup at the moment, it works fine for me, I enjoy the process and I get good beer out of it with still lots to learn. However the shiny shiny is start to make me itch, and I love the idea of pumps transferring the liquids, fully temperature controlled HLT and mashing etc but it seems that it's a mine of information.

Is there a good guide anywhere of what all these things are, and why they are better than my plastic setup (recirculating mash etc)? I have no intention of moving from my existing setup for a long while, but I'd love to know the kind of thing I'm aiming for.

Essentially I want something like the New Mexico lab in Breaking Bad, except for brewing, not making Crystal Meth.

some pics to wet the appetite so to speak

WOW that looks complex but sexy!

As somebody in your thread said, concentrate on fermentation temperature control before thinking about this. Rightly this should be my next concentration of effort.

we already had fermentation control

the fermentation cupboard has a maxi cooler on top and a tc10 with a steel probe thats sits in the wort. The cooling is done by a cornelius product coil that also sits in the fermenter.

The cupboard also has a tubular heater and its insulated with thick kingspan boards. The benefit of the cooler is you get chilled ale at whatever temp you like

They aren't better TG, they're just a different way of making great beer. There are certain advantages which mostly come down to ease, like stepped mashing and stainless pots being more sturdy than plastic.
It's more to do with what you want and how much you like to 'play' with things
I'm a self confessed tinkerer

i could make nice beer with my plastic set up herms just gives more control over certain aspects of brewing. Also you can repeat the same beer accurately every time

nice set ups lads looking good

Prolix, what is the make of the two pumps that you have together on the board please?

Probably wrong but I seem to recognise the pumps as the ones Brewzone sourced, he had a few to sell...they were a nice price but are expensive normally :hmm: P can confirm or deny
