You make it sound so simple BB. It will be good to see a picture of the the finished product when you get there.

I've just introduced the pump to my setup this year and I "fear" a herms setup might be next.

Nice bargain I bought an Asparagus steamer off fleabay a few weeks ago with the view to converting have the kettle element just need the coil and pid then its rock and roll

Bought it and the element was in an hour later...lol, I'm still a long way from my first brew using an HERMS, but it should be before November... (all being well).
It's a 24cm stockpot and 16cm deep.

I have got a stainless steel fire extinguisher which i want to use just need to hack the top off and put in a hole for the element. How much copper are you using to make the coil? and what sort of volume of vessel do you need?

Any thoughts anyone?

I've made a coil with 10m of 6mm copper . . . bad idea as the bore was too restrictive on flow. . . . remade with 6m of 10mm copper . . . better flow . . . but harder to get in a tight coil . . . had to resort to a stockpot for mine . . . works though

Thats quite a bit of copper!! obviously the size of vessel will depend on the space needed to get the coil in.

This is what I am planning on using

Then all I need is a pid. I have been on virtual villages site and saw the thread from earlier in the week but which pid should i go for and do i need a solid state relay? Me and electronics go together as well as a hedgehog in a condom factory so i haven't got a clue.

My flojet pumps should be arriving this week

I only crossed over to the darkside this week and I am already talking herms and pids. Does this condition get any better or will I be ordering some shiney next week? :hmm: :hmm:

You'll need an SSR and someway of heatsinking it. You can buy ready made heatsinks for them, or bodge one up yourself. I use a sheet of 3mm aluminium (which also doubles up as a control panel).
