Hi I've struck a big problem with my first ever wine brew its all been going great fermenting away for the past 6 days but this morning I noticed a puddle of wine round my demijohn. After a closer look I've noticed a huge crack all the way round the base. What should I do would it be ok to rack it of into a fermenting bucket and let it finish off in that?

Rack it off. but be careful moving it. It may just go completely when moved. If successful you will be fine, just let it finish as normal. But it may take a day or so to get fermenting again. Yeast don't like being moved and seem to stop fermenting for a day or so.

Thanks guys ill rack it off now and hope for the best, last time I buy a dimijohn from wilkinsons

Racked it off just in time went to move it once empty and the top just lifted right off

Glad you got it saved. :thumb: Sadly it's not just Wilko's DJ's but all new ones. They are thinner glass than they used to be so more prone to breaking. I generally use 5lt PET's when doing small brews although I do have glass ones. But PETs are unbreakable and cheap enough to chuck if they get too mucked up with fermenting crap.

Suppose its all a learning curve still at the moment but don't think I'll be using a glass DJ again. And once again thanks for you help

I've not had trouble with my collection of 15 glass DJs but I'm always /very/ careful not to knock them and they were scrutinised intently when bought.
But I shall be even more paranoid after reading your story!

I will be the same now too! I have 3 glass demijohns from wilkos but I will be checking them all over when they become empty. Glad you managed to save it in time op :thumb:

Must of been a really small crack on mine because I didn't notice it when I gave it a good clean. Bit of an eventful start to my wine brewing experience.

I've been using pets but was going to change now the 'garage clearance at car-boot sales' season is about to start, Maybe I'll think again :hmm: Thanks for the heads up :D

Taking it back to wilkos today for a refund or more than likely another brew kit :drunk:
