Some input required guys and gals. I have a 1.6HDI Berlingo and the exhausts rear box has a welded hanger band of steel which has snapped midway round the can, though it's still secure as part of the strap is still welded to the can. I'm loathed to replace the box £170 Citroen, £120 National Tyres, Eurocarparts £60 DIY) as there's little wrong with it, but there isn't an after market replacement strap for the vehicle.
I'm thinking about crimping 40kg wire round the can secured to the hanger brackets with heat shrink around the wire to stop it rubbing :hmm:

Any ideas I'm not aware of....apart from buying a new can

I personally wouldn't bother with the heat shrink. If it were me I'd probably get something like a large jubilee...

And use an extended bolt shaped to attach it to the hanger point.

Even using that with the wire would look a lot better for MOT purposes :)

Go to town with the wire though as the wire will have to withstand the force of the exhaust being bounced around when hitting bumps etc. The weight of the exhaust will be multiplied a few times I would imagine.

Thanks for the kind offer NB  Thinking about it, I may have some myself so will have to get back to you on it...when I remember where they are in the garage  I need to get the rear box of and have a good look at it...I know what the Mrs will say...just buy a new one

If the exhaust is sound, and secured to the vehicke then it's not an MOT fail :)

Can you drill the old strap and bolt a short section of steel across the 'gap' to secure it?

Do you know anyone with any welding kit? If so they can weld a fix across the corroded section :)

Do you know Scott....it just shows you how 'single mindedly' I think at times, the Mrs has just come home and said, if it's a double set of hangers why not use 2 of the E-bay items 'back to back'   ...makes perfect sense

It's a weird design TRX, the circular part of the can strap is in 2 parts, bolted together on one side only, but they must then weld the strap to the can  It's well documented how **** a design it is on the car forums and some E-bay retailers use it in their replacement strap literature........for the Picaso

Gaffer tape.. If it can bind the universe together then it can hold an exhaust for a while.

Sounds like the missus has it figured out for you then :)

There is usually a good reason we let them keep us around ;) :D

Hi V, I had the same issue on my Picasso. It's a 2 point anchor and the band rusted away mid way on the under side. First noticed it on an advisory out of an mot. They couldn't fail it as it was secure. It did rattle slightly when on rough roads.

I took it for a service in a local garage and they spotted it and welded a strap to span the gap in the middle and rejoin both halfs to fully secure it. Cost was minimal as part of the overall service. Just had an mot and there was no mention of it.

That's the one ja...ruddy annoying ! It might be worth me taking it of and going to a local chop shop but if it's getting anywhere near £30 I might as well get a new one
They do bands for the Picasso here I asked but thay said it was designed specifically for it. As with all modern cars I'm wondering if the Picasso has the same rear box as the Berlingo...it's quite likely :hmm:

I know what the Mrs will say...just buy a new one
Needless to say....I told myself so
So today I called Eurocarparts 1st as they can usually beat their own online prices
Exhaust on-line price £59.93 inc vat, in store price £42.97
O-ring hanger on-line £1.38, in store 79p
Clamp £3 odd on line, in store £1.57
Saving in-store v on-line £19.57

It pays to ask
