hi

im just putting an order together for my next step i have done 7 - 8 kits and now im thinking of extract brewing to see if it is better. i have been looking at different recipes but the 1 i am looking at doing is the white house honey porter. i have been looking at the ingredients and it says 10 HBU's bittering hops, i have done a few searches and found what it means but could somebody tell me hops to use.

cheers steve

Most hops have different bittering units, I think you mean IBU's ??

Are you doing 5 gallon? because it's dependent on the brew size for the amount needed.

I'd try downloading Brewmate (it's free), put your recipe in and then you can play around with adding different bittering hops with differing levels of Alpha Acids (the constituent in hops that makes them bitter) to achieve 10 IBUs.
Most of the sites selling hops will list the AA content of what they're selling.

Hops; that's the fun part of this hobby, go for what you fancy.
For a first brew why not use what your local shop has, say Fuggle.

Have fun, keep notes and go for it.
