Hi guys,

Im new to home brewing and need a few pointers. I grew up in a traditional country pub, we had numerous guest ales in regularly and I would consider myself a cask ale drinker.. problem is I live in South Australia now after emigrating, beer here is generally pretty tasteless and boring, some bottled boutique beer is availavble but at over five pound a small bottle its an expensive luxury.. im gagging for some good english ale so ive decided to try my own hand at it.

question is.. im not inerested in kits or premade worts... where do i start? wha do i need? and am i dreaming if i think i can produce a beer worth drinking?

any replies appreciated.

to you guys in england and supping a nice ale.. you lucky lucky b**strds..

thanks

Now that you have found the forum, your dreams will soon become reality :thumb: . You can start off with the basic equipment and produce a very acceptable beer by spending no more than around £100. A mashtun can be made from a cool box and a large pan with a tap attatched is ideal for a boiler.

No doubt you will have a lot of questions. Don't be shy, ask away with any that you have, no matter how basic they are.

Cheers Neil

hi and welcome , you could be brewing and tasting better than pub beers within a few months from now and you won't be sorry if you go for it :D

1 beer kit + add ons (sugar, spray malt etc), 1 fermentation bin (i fitted an air lock on mine), a syphon, and bottles/keg is the most basic set up, there's loads more stuff you can buy but you could get away with just that and it might cost you about £50

BIAB is really popular in aus and a cheap all grain solution. Google it, Brew In A Bag - the main difference from most all grain methods is that all you do is mash it (convert the grains to sugar which then ferments) in one big volume of water. it's a nice method and you can brew an all grain beer in 4 hours or so once you get used to it.

You might think it's hard to brew a good beer. In reality, when you can take away or add more of stuff to a recipe to suit your taste, you're likely to prefer it to commerical ale because it'll suit your taste!

You may not want to, but I would suggest doing ONE kit/extract beer, the mashing stage is quite complex and it'll give you a chance to get used to the processes, as well as having some low effort beer on tap ready to drink

Where abouts in SA are you living Lee? You in Adelaide? I moved to the UK five years ago from North East Suberbs of Adelaide. The beer maybe tastless but you're in good hands with weather and parking! It's also the home of Coopers and penfolds wine. So it's not all bad.

Oh and I almost forgot about Dan Murphy. I'm still waiting for something like that open up here in London.

Sgawt-
